Title: Kerosene as bike wash

Speaking of Kerosene, I use a good quality car wash like Armor All in a five gallon bucket about half to two thirds full. Then I add a cup of Kerosene. I learned this trick from an older lady who did windows. She liked the way it helped sheet the water off with no hand drying. I haven't use it on my cycle, but I use it for all my vehicles. It works wonders for a car that sits under a tree or for getting suicidal bugs off the front. I've done this for about 30 years with no discernible degradation of rubber, paint, or wipers. It does smell for a couple of hours, but soon goes away. Plus it really shines.  :)

Kerosene and diesel have been used for decades as a paint preservative. Even collector vehicle restoration guides recommend it for long term project/parts car storage. Works well as a chrome cleaner also.

Not trying to start anything, but this method also dumps a cup of petro-chemicals into the environment each time it is used......

Your world, your choice, however.  Just something to think about!   8-)

The county road departments down here still spray used transformer oil along the ditches for weed and mosquito control. And most non-state or federal highway type roads are chip sealed (crushed limestone over bunker oil). The odd cup of kerosene means nothing.

I wonder why we dont ride right between where the tires run on the roads? Could it be all those thousands of cars dripping little drops of oil?

Ever notice right behind a little bump how dark it is, from the droplets made to fall?
Sometimes planes jettison fuel.
Large concentrations, not good, a little here & there, mehh,, no biggeee..

Knew a guy years ago up here in the rust belt who used to put his car up on the lift a couple of times a winter and wash off the undercarrige with kerosene from a garden sprayer. Claimed it kept the car from disentegrating from the road salt. Don't remember what kero cost back then but it's about $5 - 6 bucks a gallon around here now. I'll stick to soap and water I think.

Yes, your world your choice, but when someone else dumps stuff in his world he dumps it in mine too.  If everyone who rode motorcycles started using this technique, we'd have a thousand gallons of kerosene dumped into the environment every day.

Never heard of a kerosene wash before. I'll definitely remember that considering I'm in the rust belt. I know the canucks oil-spray the bottoms of their cars but I'm not sure if it's available (or legal) here in the states.

Garden department pump up sprayer and oil of your choice. Legal? Probably not. Effective? Every oil coated surface on the frames of my antique trucks are pristine under the built up oil/sand/dust slurry and one is a 1969 the other is a 1949. Neither have ever been undercoated...

Oh I know I could easily do it myself but I just let the "natural" leaky gaskets on my engine do that for me. But in canada you can drive into an instant oil change shop and get it done but they definitely don't have that at any shop around me.

Just take your stuff to the local do it yourself car wash and wash it there, so it goes down the drain to the separator then to the treatment plant...saves the environment

It came from the environment.  Then was modified into something harmful to the environment.  It did not come out of the ground as kerosene.

Your point would be??

I'll have to try some as a finishing wipe, then there won't be any tossed into the sewer just some that vaporates.

It came from the Earth, it'll go back into the Earth.

Most petrochemicals are distilled at various temperatures.  So no, it was not created, just separated from a mixture.

I was watching "The Men Who Mde America" on PBS. It seems Kerosene was all the rage, and I never thought about not having light after dark except with whale oil. I think it was Rockefeller who made the purest Kero with the same standards each time. Hence the name "Standard Oil". He had many ups and downs and kerosene was giving way to electric lights. That's when they turned to a by product of making Kero that they had been pouring out or burning--Gasoline.  ;D

First of all, I will say AGAIN I have never washed my bike with Kerosene. I use it on my cars and trucks.

And while my wife works for Wal Mart I do not advise anyone to pay $8.00 for a quart of Kero. Here in the South people use Kerosene to heat shops and barns with free standing heaters, so Kerosene is found at many service stations for much less than $8.00 per gallon. However if you have to buy a seperate can for your Kerosene and only use a little each year it may be more cost effective for you to buy there.  :)
