Title: Decompression Unit
Post by paulmarshall on 11/30/12 at 22:32:35

Has any body disconnected their Decomp unit and ran their bike without too much trouble? I understand that this puts a strain on the starter and battery, but how much of a strain? Providing the bike starts easily would this strain then effect these parts? Why you might ask? Well my Decomp unit makes a horrible clunk each time I push the starter, And cosmeticly the solenoid is a eye sore with my custom tank not covering it. I understand that their are some manual options out there, I dont like the Ryca set up with the long rod. Are their other options? Or can I run without it?

the strain depends on where the engine stops.
if it stops on the compression stroke, the starter will stall and you have maximum stress.

Is it common for the Decomp to make a loud clunk when it engages?

depends what you call a loud clunk.
certainly a loud click.
but your bike aint stock
is it hitting the tank?

No its not hitting the tank. I guess I could call it a loud click. It is deffinitly noticable.

Disconnect it, work the bike around so ya know its not coming up on TDC, hit the starter.. noise gone? Decomp unit, Noise Not Gone? well,,
Or, if pulling the plug is easy enough,,

On a stock bike the "CLUNK" is muffled a bit by the tank - with yours hanging out I would think it might be louder.

I just bought one of these and plan on making my decompression manually operated.

Is this lever to be mounted on the decompression shaft on the cylinder head?

Manual levels are usually mounted on the left handlebar...
... but you can mount one anywhere you want...

Just keep in mind, what your hands need to do to start a bike... :-?...

Throttle, start button, clutch,.. and decomp...  (consider being stalled at a light, in gear, in traffic)...

I do have my left hand completely free when I start due to by passing the clutch switch.

The lever I posted was originally used on Kick Start bikes I believe.  I was planning on mounting it on the handlebar.....the only issue was the lever is built for 7/8" bars.....so I was probably going to adapt it to mount to the cllutch lever bolt.....or something similar.

What kinda shape will ya be in if you ever get to a lite & stop &, when it turns green, realize youre stopped & stalled out, in 5th gear,,, I did that, ONCE,,,

I've been running my bike with the decomp system bypassed since the beginning of Aug. This year.   Haven't had any issues so far even on cold mornings.  I have a Big crank battery and it still checks out like it's brand new.  Maybe I'm just lucky and the motor always stops on a non-compression stroke?  Most times she fires right away like it almost starts as soon as I hit the starter button. Very rarely does she crank for even a few seconds and that is only on cold mornings, those that are below 60F but even then she doesn't even seem to struggle to turn over.

Myself I'm thinking about just pulling all the decomp related stuff off, to give me a better place to mount my HID control box once I decide on which one I'm gonna go with next since the system I have I've gone through 2 RMA's and still don't have one that works more then a few months.

RpNSht thumb lever works really well and easy to use. only took about 2 weeks to get it from when I paid.
