Title: Not sure if its the jets...
Post by BelizeanBanman on 11/29/12 at 21:54:26

Finally got my Savage back after replacing the starter clutch ($400 including new timing chain).

I replaced the jets before all this, and I knew it was running too rich. So now I changed the main jet back to what it came with and the pilot I think is 1 higher. When I ride now everything is fine until I guess about 1/4 throttle when it stutters like crazy.. Then when I reach 3/4 or higher it's fine again. Except I'm stuck at 60MPH tops which isn't a bad thing I guess haha.. Anyways, what are suggested steps to take if I don't want it to stutter at 1/4 throttle and I want to go 80MPH again.

I have a Dyna installed after buying the bike and I made a custom air filter by buying air filter sponge from a Kawasaki dealer and cutting it to size.

New chain?
did you check the cam timing?
At TDC, the marks on the cam should be horizontal.

If it's off, it'll keep you under 55/60.

but it sounds like you need a bigger main.

Have you oiled sponge filters before?...

For noobs, if not you,...  You need to get oil on every inch of the the filter, but have it squeezed out, so there's as little as possible excess...
Just a very light, even coating...

If that's okay,.. I'd say you need more main jet,.. or the one you have has a blockage...
Also,.. be sure the slide is not sticking,... but that usually causes more intermittent behaviour...

... and Versy knows the cam timing thing... he's our cam chain pro...

Im also stuck in 60-65 mph. I think it might be the petcock, so I have ordered Raptor.

petcock, by itself won't cause this.  a bad vac line, a dirty carb, etc.
be prepared to need to fix another issue.

Yep, I have already removed the carb for petcock/vacume line mod + cleaning + jetting + opening airtake. I have to do everything at same time, due next test drive will be in Late april/early May.

My reason cannot be too small main, due in my 88 i have 155.

I'm going to try a bigger jet.. As for the filter, it came very slightly oily so I thought it was OK. And I'm quite very sure it's not the timing.

For once I did not work on it myself -Too busy with work and classes. Because of that I got a complimentary large dent on the tank >:( So I advise you all to either do work yourself or be around when someone else works on it.

Thanks for the insight guys!  :) :)

EDIT: By large I meant about an inch in diameter; so even though it makes the bike look worse to me it's not TOO big a deal since it's not like it is in perfect shape cosmetically anyways. If I get it a paint job I'll take care of it then.

If a professional shop bent your bike, you can make them pay, cant you?

Ya I called him the day after and expressed how displeased I was with it. He called me back and offered to pay but I'm far too soft to push the issue. I rather we stay friends so that next time I still get good service because he does usually do good work

He may feel the same way, wanting to keep a good customer & friend.

Split the pain,

Maybe ask him to hook you up with someone to fix it & split the repair cost.
