Title: Puzzled by blueing?
Post by gerald.hughes on 11/26/12 at 12:38:40

Just put a Dyna muffler on the bike, and have noticed that it has developed some hot spot burns in less than 1000 miles.  Any ideas on what is causing it.  I don't think that it is a lean/rich issue, since the entire muffler is not turning, only these spots.

Thanks.

hi there, looks like a hot spot caused by the baffle directing the hot gases to the outer case, it happens on my shorty turnout too, maybe mixture, localised blueing is caused by hotspots, sometimes from a mild weak mixure

The exhaust gasses on a DYNA muffler travel through an inner pipe to about the front 1/3rd until they reach the portion of the center tube that is perforated - then the gases move into the outer shell where yours has turned blue.  The gasses then flow through the outer shell and then pass back into the center tube through another set of holes.

Your muffler has turned blue where the gasses are flowing out of the center tube and make the outer shell hot.  Not exactly sure why......what jetting to you have and do you sit in traffic for a long time?  My DYNA does not turn blue.

Also it's important not to have any oils or waxes on the muff or header.

As they'll turn it blue too.

That is caused by something on the outer surface.

S/trapps come with instructions to Clean the Thing thoroughly or the warranty will not apply. OIls used in manufacturing do that, clean it, get some Blue Job,, ( Man,, I hope that the right name)  & clean it up.,

My Dyna didn't turn blue but then I had it professionally jetted.

Thread titles like "puzzled" and "yea or nea" don't do much to get people interested in the thread.  "Thread" would be as informative, eh?

You're right, Gryro...  Better?...  :-?...
"Puzzled by blueing?"...

PS,.. after thinking about it,... I think the muffy I put on Gerry's bike is a Cat model..  They do tend to blue like that... (It's not from any real restriction,.. but the heat element of the Cat coil)...
So,.. I'd just ignore it...
Blue is ever so pretty anyway... :-?..

Serow....Your a genious!

I have looked down the throat of a DYNA with a cat inside....and that is exactly where the cat element s located.

Mystery solved.

As usual, a big thanks to all of you. Now at least I know why it is blueing, and I can live with that.  I am not much on looks, hell on function, but not so much on looks.  As long as the muffler works, and is not going to burn through, I am ok.

One of the things that is so great about this site, is that there is so much collective experience that most calls for help result in answers.  Thanks again.
