Has anyone found a non OEM engine guard for the S40? The OEM is so small and can't possibly protect anything. Any suggestions for an aftermarket guard. Thanks!

So far I've come up empty-handed. I'm at the point now of trying to make one out of EMT conduit and painting it black. I'm not really concerned with the protection of the engine as much as I want to make leather covers for wind protection for my legs when the temps drop below 35*F. I'd only use them in the winter of course!

I put highway pegs on the OEM guard and they add some standoff from the ground should you drop it. Not that I have ever dropped my bike. Just an assumption on my part. ;)

I've been searching for a while and I've seen a picture of one on a bike but I think it was a custom job. The oem seems like a joke as it def isnt big enough to protect anything if it was ever dropped.

Google "Wingerline Bars" ... a few members here have 'em on their LS650s ... only aftermarket replacement for the OEM crash bar that I know of and is MUCH wider (and better looking) than the OEM too ...

What's an engine guard supposed to do? I mean it sounds like it would be something that protects the engine but I can't imagine what exactly you'd be protecting it from. Radiators are made of super-soft copper, brass and/or aluminum that are only slightly thicker than paper yet they are directly exposed to the elements and nothing happens to them unless you crash into something.

Do you crash a lot? Even if you do, I doubt the engine "guard" is going to do much if you crash so hard that you bust your forks so bad you reach the engine.

Engine guards are for aesthetic purposes only.

Engine guards are also a great place to mount highway pegs and chaps to block the cold wind. If they are wide enough, they may protect the engine and your legs if you lay it down. They won't do anything for protection in a collision. I agree that most people use them for the looks.

Straight leg rigid frame frame Knuckle/Pan style HD bars can be adapted to fit fairly easily. Longer front engine mount bolt (all thread) and a U-bolt around the frame down tube. Requires some drilling, shifter arm mods and brake arm mods.

Readily available and cheap. I have one here that I decided I was entirely too unmotivated to make work with the same era half moon floorboards adapted to the bike last year. If you run that front guard, a set of same era HD or Indian rear guards modified to fit the shock mounts would look good with it...

Thanks! I will be contacting wingerline over the weekend. I put on engine guards on every bike I have purchased. They do work for keeping my leg save and some bike parts out of harms way. And, no I do not drop my bike a lot but have laid it down gently one time. Without the guards I would hate to think what could have happened. It gives me peace of mind.
