Title: Tiny Diesel Engine
Post by Starlifter on 11/19/12 at 13:39:16

OPERATIONAL V-12 DIESEL ENGINE THAT FITS IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND.

Took 1220 hours (a year and a half?) to make the 261 pieces. Note the end-loaded crankshaft into the block (like an Offy), 12 individual cylinder heads, TINY rods and pistons, dual "underhead" cams with pushrods to rockers in the heads. And, he did break-in runs using an electric drill driving the crankshaft!

Even if you're not an engineer, you'll love this!

A thing of true beauty.  And, I bet it puts out as much hp as our Savages.

Here's another.   This one is a 4 stroke single with spark plug ignition.   It has a rope (well, string) pull start.   I think it had a 1/8 inch piston.

For YOUR nose hair?   Probably not!

A lot of the old model airplane motors didn't have rings either (for instance, small COX units).   I'm not sure what the clearance or tolerance was, but the pistons were very well fitted to the bore.   Of course, these were 2 strokes and so didn't have an oil separation problem.   I wore a few of those out, and they held pretty good compression even after a fair amount of use.  On these small machined demo motors they may not even put oil in the crank or worry about blowby, but even so, it would be a splash distribution system at best.

Im well aware of 2 stroke plane engines w/ no rings. I have an Enya 35 Ive put over 6 gallons thru. But these pistons had ring grooves. Ive never seen a scale diesel & ever model engine running on doesel Ive seen has a threaded plate, to screw up & down, to drop & raise compression.

Yep, seen those little screw type diesels.  Always wanted one too because you didn't need fiddle with a glow plug or battery.   I remember years ago, there was a company who even made a Wankel rotary.   I once saw one in a model shop, and wanted to buy it just to take home and disassemble.      :)

I had a Cox .010. I never put it on a plane. Id just fuel it up & run it. Holding it by the fuel tank. It was just cool.,.

In those ringless two strokes the oil acted as a ring, not all of it burned, which is why you had oil all down the side of your plane.

I can think of MANY things better to do with my time, but it is quite impressive none-the-less  ;)

There's no ignition, that I can see anyway.   It is strange tho, because if it had the compression required for deese, you'd think it would be hard to turn over.

I had seen this before and I thought it was compressed air powering it.
Not sure it actually combusts.

I wondered how he planned on running it since he geared the camshaft 1:1 with the crank. It wouldn't run on its own even if he had fuel and spark. It's run on compressed air. Too bad.

Yep, I agree.....compressed air.  The pistons are pushed down on each stroke by the compressed air and exhaust on each up stroke.  That is why the cams are geared 1:1.

The maching skill is incredible.....I have trouble getting 2 holes to line up very well when I get my drill out! :o

I've built a couple model steam engines from store bought castings and am totally amazed at the skill this guy has. Even if it is a compressed air engine it is just beautiful, I'm in total aw.
