Title: Front and Rear bulb issues...
Post by rquarantello4232 on 11/18/12 at 07:28:39

When I turn on my bike the low beam does not come.  The high beam works but low beam doesnt so im guessing the low beam relay or whatever device that allows the low be is shot.  How do I replace that??

My rear left turn signal works but my right does not, it is making the brake light blink. I double checked the wiring and it is correct so im guessing that bulb is out too. Also the arrow indicator on the gas tank lights up on the right but not on the left which make me belive the rear bulb is out. Im trying to get the bulb out with no sucess.   Any tips and can i just go to any car parts store and buy a new bulb?

Sounds like the bulb in the tank display is out, Sounds like a Lot of bulbs are out,,, what happened? Get a lightning strike?

Ohm Meters are cheap & handy, bulbs can be tested In the cosket, from a distance, from a connector in the harness, if laying hands on the bulb is hard, Or, if you know what youre doing, you can jump a 12V source into a wire & if the light comes on, its good,, if not, then it MIte be bad, could be a wire or connector issue,,

Pull the bulbs you suspect & look at them, the filaments on most are easy to see.

When you go to LOw Beam, does the headlite turn off?

Yes, if it is on high and I switch to low the light shuts off

So i just need to take off the front headlight and pull out the bulb just like a a car and replace it or is the "low beam element" dead and i just need to order that part??

Rear signals are 1156 single element bulbs... brake/tail and front signals are 1157 dual element... all clear color...
Headlight is H4... one bulb, with dual element...
All these bulbs are available at any auto parts store... or even wallmart, kmart, target...

Just checked the rear turn signal and swapped bulbs with the front and the rear didnt come on, so the bulb is still good so it must be electical.  But if green is hooked to green and black with a strip is wired black with a stripe, what else could it be.  ***These are used but new back turn signals.*** I purchased them about a week or 2 ago, and when i put them on, they both worked. So i dont know, maybe bad connections but i didnt put connectors on them. I spliced them, twisted them together, and put heat shrink over it for a complete splice....  NO idea!!!

Ya, front light bulb needs to be switched, i can see a disconnected fillament thing so that must be the low beam.  The darn bulb is a hooker to get out though.    So that problem will be solved tonight,   ill wait for thoughts on the right rear turn signal

front is 1157,... rear is 1156... not interchangable...
swap right to left to test, not front to rear...

ooooo, tricky tricky.    Thank you

Also,... if you don't have a meter... you can pull bulbs and test them with a jumper wire and a 9v battery... they will light dimly if the filament is good...

MOst bulbs, especially the clear ones, are easy enough to look thru & see the filament. If you can see a gap,, Its done, sometimes ya even get little bits rolling around loose & sometimes ya get a blackish smudge inside the envelope.

Christmas Mini bulbs? Ohh,, good luck on that one,,

Ya definitely the low beam is out that's an obvious break.  But the rear right blinker looks fine but I will buy a new bulb just incase but I think it's a wiring or overal blinker issue.  But I won't worry about that too much because from my experience watching bikers, they don't use the blinkers

to get aat the bulbs in the tank, you'll have to remove the tank and flip it over and pull the bulbs out from underneath.  Those are "onelikedees" bulbs.  take one out and match it up at the store.

Haha.  Ok      Once I fix these all I need is a good helmet, jacket and insurance and I'm set to save $600/m that I spend on my challenger for gas

Could always remove turn signals completely...make sure you cap/tape each wire individually so they don't ground out accidentally...depends on what you want to do with the bike.  I'm slowly working towards a bobber look so the turn signals went early.

True,  I only paid 600 for it so I'm just curious how everything works and have some time to figure it out before I drop 7000 on a crotch rocket

Ok, i have no idea whats going on now.  All blinker bulbs work, no filaments are broken, all bulbs have been tested. Wiring was checked and rechecked.

Blinker to the right, front right and front left blinker blink, back blinker does not, Brake like flashes like the right rear blinker would.   Right blinker indicator does not blink, (that is prolly just a little bulb out though. I have not taken the take off to confirm)

Blinker to the left, front and back blinker blink correctly??  I dont know what could have happened while it was sitting under its cover but it has me so confused and I would just say forget it but it has an upcoming inspection due and i dont think they will let it pass... :'( :'(

if your brake lights blinking when your blinker should...

you either got it wired incorrectly or there's a short in the wiring.

"switched front and rear"

Wait WHAT?? Not only are they different bulbs internally - they are different externally. The locating pins are offset on the 1157 dual-filament bulb which means you somehow managed to jam them into the wrong sockets. Didn't you notice something wasn't right when it took all that extra effort to get them into place?

Put the tools down. Call a professional next time. Clearly mechanics is not for you. Clearly.

Ok clearly you didnt read every post i put in here or replied to, so one dont insult my intelligence, and second i dont need your replies anymore because they were worthless to begin with.

I said i tested it with the front, not by jaming it in there, but by pushing without turning, because of the size difference, ofcourse they wont turn.  So since that didnt work, i then tested back left to back right bulbs allowing me to push in and twist to lock them in. Again it didnt work. I then tested the back right bulb in the back left blinker and it works coming to the conclusion that the bulb is not the problem but either the blinker, or a wiring issue.

My conclusion on why it is not wired wrong is because when i replaced the blinkers and rewired them, they both worked. This only happend a week ago and not from the get go, so I think like what VER said that it is a short.

This site was generated for questions, but if you insult my questions by asking an insulting question, then you arent helping me one bit. Its a learning process and you learn by f***ing up. So please advise me if messing up my bike is making it hard for you to sleep at night, ill light it on fire and buy another one because even though my taxes are going up due to this administration, its pocket change to me.  But since thats not the objective of FIXING, then your comment will be ignored and i will attempt VER's route.

Thank you all

Another thing to check when things like turn signals act oddly is grounding. A broken ground can cause weird symptoms.

alright, I will try that as well

In all fairness RQ, most of what you wrote is intelligible.

well ya im just trying to explain what im seeing as best i can in words. If i need to take a video with my phone and post it on here to show what is going on and that is helpful for everyone else, then I will.

Shoot us a video,.. or some pics please...
This would be very helpful...

very neat thing happened today while i was trying to figure out my blinker issue.  I wanted to test the wiring from where the blinkers connect so i swapped the right blinker connections with the left blinker connections. When i did this, i indicated a right blinker, which caused the left blinker to come on and the right blinker indicator on my gas tank to flash. This told me that the bulb in my gas tank isnt out, my wiring is correct, all my bulbs are fresh and not broken, but there is just something oddly wrong with the right rear blinker and so i am just going to order another one. This will solve my problem and i can move on.  I tried to upload the .mov from my phone but it wouldnt let me. If someone can walk me though how to post a video on here i will post the ones i made so you can see what im seeing.

FIXED!!!!!!!!!!      Turned out when i put in the blinkers and tightened the back rest back up, i pinched the wires and somehow that made a short. All bulbs work, all blinkers work, yessssssssssssss..  Buying insurance on tuesday and first ride on wednesday.    Thanks all.

This is exactly why I didnt need to put my tools down and get a professional  . Learning process.   So for all the other noobs out there, if you want it bad enough and think clearly enough, any problem can be fixed without paying someone else to do it.

Im not reading this whole thing to see, so, Ill ask, Did you, at any time in your posts asking for help, include that you had been removing & installing stuff back there?

Title: Re: Front and Rear bulb issues...
Post by rquarantello4232 on 11/24/12 at 20:20:06

I had posted that I had to install new blinkers and upon installation that were all working fine.  And a few days later the problem occurred.  I dist say I had to take off the bracket to do so because that is, or what I thought , implied because that is what you have to do to take off and put on new blinkers

The lesson here is, any time work is done in an area & then a problem pops up, go back to that last thing,, Ive stepped on that sand trap rake so many times I sing soprano..

haha,  which was exactly my problem,  i put on the blinkers, tested them they worked fine, bolted the passenger seat on, tested them again and they didnt work. So my first thought was i tested them so often the bulb popped so, honeslty it was agonizing but really fun.  I also had 10 extra minutes before the "supervisor" returned home to mount my aftermarket horn becuase i feel slightly safer with it. Here is a side by side pic

Mounted perfectly in the same spot as the stock horn, just had to make the bolt hole a little bigger. Its a good distance from the engine and the front wheel has full clearance.
