Title: The sounds of a cam tensioner...
Post by Coaxial on 11/17/12 at 14:23:55

Hey!

So I have 1 more week of riding before winter season and I would like to know if my bike is safe for riding for this last week. My plan was to open her up during the winter and check. Also installing Verslagens tensioner.

Info:
2007 Model.
34,500KM (21,437 mi) Presently
Purchased at 29,900KM (18,578 mi) from a dealer who certified the bike. (did not know at the time to ask about the tensioner and camchain)

Here is what I recorded of my bike:

Thanks for any input.

Listen/ feel by the oil filter cover, if you feel atapn' it's not safe.

If the bike was at operating temperature, I could not hear anything unusual. My '06 sounds about the same.

Mine sounded similar I had bought it used with 23K miles on it. When I opened it up I measured it at 22mm out.  I think I avoided a mess.  I would guess I was rolling the dice every time I rode it, I am glad I didn't roll a 7.  I ordered the gasket and oil filter, opened it up and sent the adjuster to Verslagen1.  He is working his magic on it and I should have everything back together within a week or two tops.

Either get confirmation its done, or open & look,, I wouldnt push the start button again till I KNEW it wouldnt be a parts bike.

I would love to just open it up right now. I wish I had torque wrenches. I will abstain from riding this bike this week. I will do the oil filter cover check for any tapping as well.

YOu dont need a torque wrench to pull the side cover,, IF you have problems in there, then, yea,, torque wrench time.

Yes dude...it looks like a loosen camchain.
very similar signs, on my savage, too, was the same noise switch. but I could not believe that a camchain may weaken after 10000[ch1082][ch1084] .you should to open the right cover and all you'll see.. .

probably need to visually inspect as that sounds like pretty much every savage i've heard.

the only issue i found with the video is a lack of bluing on your exhaust header  :P

Your bike sounds normal.

Your bike sounds ok... I have an 07 with 4000 less miles than you have and my tensioner is 18mm & change out so I havent worried about it yet- but I do feel the cover on that side with my foot every once in awhile for anything out of the ordinary. I'd say ride it  :) but I'd open it up ASAP just for piece of mind.

Oh my.. getting mixed opinions.... I will air on the safe side and stop riding until I check it.

As for the fast idle, would that just be the idle screw being set to high? or is that one of those carburaetor settings?

at that mileage i'd say check it...also, fast idle is better than too low...

I still think that chain tensioner is close to the limit of the service and its need to check . but if, before the end of the season trips remained only a week, then this test may be postponed to the winter time and is very likely that the idle engine speed is set too high..

Sung to tune of Sounds of Silence...

Hello tapping my old friend
I've come to hear you once again
Cause you're loose as hell and got me spooked
That my cam chain might just jump a tooth

(Chorus)
And the vision that I se-e-e-e in my old chain
Still remains
The warnings in the Savage Forum

In sleepless nights I turned and tossed
Bout that cam chain coming off
Shoulda done it, now I kick my azz
Coulda bought a Versy in the past

But my fa-a-a-ate is now sealed in that old chain
And still remains
The warnings in the Savage Forum

I look at mileage on the bike. Once it gets past 15,000 miles, I figure its a hand grenade. Havin a peek any time after 12,000 miles seems reasonable to me, & would be a great time for a Versy. Will a guy get by with running one past 20,000? Maybe, its been done,, BUT,, One Day, the side comes off. Me, personally? Id rather do it before the engine is ruined.,KInda hard riding & enjoying it with that question hanging.

measure the length the plunger from the housing to the edge where the plunger transitions to the flat.

19mm so it is past your reccomended <18mm measurement. Did you receive the paypal payment for your tensioner?

well here is the answer to your question... now you only have to install the Vers's mod and you can still drive on your savage.
