... the vac line while performing Serowbot's petcock test in order to see if I have diaphragm leakage?  I sniffed the line after I took it off of the carb nipple and it did smell a bit like gasoline.  Not sure if that's a sign of anything.

that hose is between the gas tank and the carb... a faint smell of gas?

Given how pungent gasoline is, I would say it's a faint smell.

If it is anything less than a 2.8 on the Keester-Smithereen PAP scale, you're fine.

(PAP = petroleum aromatic pungency)

Generally you have to be way past seven for there to be any concern.

The way it was relayed to me was that a fellow (I think his name was Flotsam G. Williker) had his keester blown to smithereens from smelling pungent substances so pungent, the vapors combined with the natural methane in his posterior and spontaneously combusted.

I've heard of people taking off their vac petcock and putting on a Raptor so they can have the stock vac petcock unit to carry in their pocket as a synthetic cigarette replacement.

Puffa-puffa, nice !!!

___Woosh___       musta been a fresh one .... and you aren't supposed to light them

This is quite right. The running engine sucks the air out of the line, producing a light vacuum. Now you stop the engine and air and gas vapor re-enters into the line. Behind the throttle you should have a mix of air and gasoline.

No, sorry. The line he mentioned is between the carb and the petcock.
Just another sort of paranoia coming up?  ;)

I personally am not shy for a handful of gasoline molecules in my mouth, so for a quick test I suck on the vac line from the carburetor side, close the line with the tip of my tongue and feel the continuous vac sucking my tongue. If it does for about 10 seconds, I can trust the diaphragm to be OK. Sucking pulses makes the work of the diaphragm audible.

Both the vac line and the gas line technically go between the carb and the petcock, a very short throw from the tank Mr hair splitter. One carries gas, the other vacuum.  it would not be impossible for a wif of gas to exist in the vac line, whether it's sucked in on shutdown or permiated thru the diaphragm.

If one can get gas on his hands and thoroughly wash, then go into the house and still smell it...
