Title: Wooden balance bike
Post by ToesNose on 11/08/12 at 14:03:45

All my family and neighbors think it's way cool, figured I'd post a pic of my three year old's wood balance bike  :D

looks like you might be able to fit a savage motor on there  ;)

Seat looks comfy too.

I have an old beach cruiser bicycle that I was thinking of using the hardware off and making a wood frame like that LOL   ::)

My son has been tooling around on this since last X-Mass when he was 28 months old. Although it's only recently that he glides around the driveway with his feet up for ten feet lengths and down the side of the house with a slight decline for 60 feet or so LOL.  It's not heavy and the seat is adjustable to different heights.   ;)     He'll be ready for a peddle bike this spring for sure, the best part about the balance bike is the transition to a peddle bike doesn't require training wheels since they have learned to balance already  :D

I have twin boys that each have a balance bike (not nearly this cool though) We got them for them last summer when they were about 27months. One boy is a total daredevil and within two weeks he started coasting like that. The other is a big chicken who would only go step by step. Fast forward to this summer and both of them go cruising down our backyard hill racing each other on their "motorycyles"  Makes me laugh  ;D

I think some of the earliest bikes were balance bikes.   These would have worked quite well if you lived on level ground, as you could coast a good part of the time.   A bicycle is actually one of the most efficient machines man has ever created, as far as energy input vs work output.   In other words, you could travel much further for the same amount of energy expenditure, than walking or running.

Thats the way I understand it.,The first bicycle had no pedals,,it was, effectively, a rolling seat.

In hilly country, walk up, coast down,
In mountainous places, someone better figger out some Brakes!

IIRC, Ive read where a 10 speed ( it was years ago, before the bazzillion speed bikes) was The most efficient form of transportation, tho.,. IMO, hitchiking beats it.

Sure is  ;D

My 9yr old leading the daredevil twin, followed by the 5yr old (who did get off the training wheels this summer) and then the overly cautious twin...

So cute!...
My first two wheeler had direct drive pedals,... and we lived on a hill...
Basically a fly n' crash proposition...
I don't think I was a planned pregnancy... :-?...
