Title: Suzuki Wankel
Post by 360k+ on 11/06/12 at 06:55:37

I remember seeing one of these VERY RARE bikes on CycleTrader a few years ago.   I was very tempted even knowing that they were a POS that Zuk was never able to get debugged.   You gotta admit, it would be cool riding around on a Wankel rotary.

I saw one of those just the other day at a motorcycle auction of mostly older bikes.  Sorry I didn't stick around long enough to see how much it went for.

I owned a brand new one back in the day.  The first year Suzuki made them they did not sell them all, the next year they repainted them black and changed the tennis ball turn signals and goofy speedometer/tachometer into a standard style....and still didn't sell them all.  They then put a big rebate on them, and I bought one for $ 1,600 brand new.  I put a black Windjammer SS fairing on it.

It was a real novelty, I never had any problems with mine - but I only rode it about 1,000 miles.  It sounded a bit like a Harley when idling and was kind of a deep sound - but at speed it sounded more like a 175 Honda.  It had a bunch of torque and if you let off the throttle too quickly in the lower gears it could slide the back tire.  The exhaust came out into a casting and then it split into a left and a right exhaust pipe that had an inner and outer pipe with an air intake that allowed air to blow between the two pipes.  When you shut the engine off theh exhaust would click and click and click as it cooled down.  I sold it when I moved to Cincinnati and started college.

I have no idea......gas was 32 cents a gallon and I never kept track of the mileage.  I only rode it around on the country roads....and never went more than 50 miles in a trip.  (I had a very limited range of social and geographical comfort in those days).

Nope....I didn't live in Kentucky then.  I lived in an Amish, Quaker, Mennonite area in northeastern Ohio.

Dr Wankel made his contribution like many other engineers, Mazda kept using it until this or last year. Charles Yale Knight's double sleeve valve was succesful for many years. Roy or Ray Fedden of Bristol made hugely successful single sleeve aero engines at huge expense. There have been many other attempts at making a variety of internal combustion engines, however, we all come back to the reciprocating poppet valve type.

For my birthday, last year...  my buddy's wife was going to cook me an English dinner...  bangers and mash...
At the gourmet butchers,... she asked for wankers...
They didn't have any...

I think we had pizza.. :-?...
