Title: How do you know when you are on empty??
Post by rquarantello4232 on 10/31/12 at 12:49:48

Just noticing on my 01 ls650 there is no gas indicator. Do I just fill up to the top and drive it until i barely have any gas left and then calculate how many miles it took to get to that point??

:)

The stock indicator is an audable indicator.
When you stop hearing an indication, you're outta gas.   ;D

some use a luggage lock and set it to the last 3 digits on the odometer.

fill up every 100 miles.

rquarantello4232 - as stated above - the audible indicator referred to must be the sound of running out of fuel - then switch to reserve - the next time you hear that sound   you're empty   I generally only fill up after going to reserve   depends on your situation   there was a warning in the owners manual about filling the tank too high   probably worst-case scenario stuff   maybe hot weather/hot engine / something else wrong ?   I've filled mine to the rim(with Brim)  no, with gas and have been fine

Rock the bike back-n-forth when you hop on. Get used to the way it reacts and sounds at different fuel levels. Don't be one of those guys that starts the bike when standing next to it and then hopping on and riding away because you're never gonna learn how to tell your gas level that way.

I measured the reserve capacity of the stock and Raptor petcock.  When you run out of fuel in the "ON" position......you have about 33 miles of reserve with the stock petcock.....and about 25 miles with the Raptor (assuming you get about 55 mpg).

We have a 2.8 gallon tank.....so at an assumed 55 mpg you should be able to go 121 miles on the stock petcock before you hit reserve, and about 129 miles before you hit reserve on the Raptor.

As stated previously.....most of us plan on getting fuel every 100 miles and avoid ever having to turn use the "Reserve" setting.  Some use a grease pencil and write the mileage on their mirror when they fill up, and others use a luggage lock that they turn the number to show the mileage for the fill up.

Good point - I do this every time before I ride - to "gauge" the amount of fuel remaining(without an actual gauge)   and after each fill up   when I add very small amounts of fuel injector cleaner/iso heat/star tron/sea foam

I just fill up as soon as I can after the odometer hits an 100 mile increment. :-X

Assuming 55mpg would be detrimental to me...mine is usually closer to 42-44mpg so I usually have to switch to Reserve around 90 miles.

My tank takes exactly 2.93 gallons from dry to the neck.  Tested it twice!
Q. How do you know when you are on empty??
A. Your engine starts sputtering, you switch to reserve, and find you had forgotten to put it back on main.

I like my Sigma Bike Computer.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003BCG9EK/ref=asc_df_B003BCG9EK2205876?smid=ATVPDKI...

Serves both as the trip-o-meter and as a speedometer.  I have it mounted in the middle of my handle bars.  much easier to see than the speedometer on the tank.  I just fill up every 100 Miles.

Here is a good install tutorial

Gas in the crotch is really not good, next thing you know people start sniffing there asking if its Ethyl  (to paraphrase an olde joke).   ;)

TCLOCKS. Get in the habit of popping the gas cap and checking your gas level when you first get on of a day for one thing along with the tires oil level etc.
I use a luggage lock mostly but add the GPS with trip meter for longer trips.

What JOG states might be true ?   Has anyone ever experienced(with our bike) a problem by filling the tank close the top ?   Now if I interpret JOG's statement in a different way    Too much gas(of the non-liquid internal type) - I know that feeling     and the risk of leaking on your leg(I know that feeling, as well)    ;D

Yeah- It'll take about 2.92 gals. to fill to the neck... is bad to fill that much tho. Expanding of the fuel might cause it to pee on ur leg or worse onto your hot motor ssssssssssssspppooof.

She likes it when I shake she gently before I ride her  :) just to see if she's ready- either way I usually fill her... at 100 miles

That's why she's rated a 2.8 gallon tank...  you don't fill yer' coffee cup right to the rim either...
... or do you?... (well, knock it off dummy!... just pour yourself another cup if you need more)...
:-?...
