Title: My first time down!
Post by DrunkenDwarf on 10/30/12 at 09:17:14

(The incident with the missing kickstand doesn't count.)

Finally! After 4 years I got my first one out of the way. Luckily it was a really slow lowside. A couple factors, the biggest being operator error.

* new tires
* haven't ridden in 2 months (needed tires)
* rain

I think what happened was I gave it a little too much gas getting out of my drive way and when I turned on to the street the rear wheel slipped out from under me. I got my right leg out to slow my fall, but didn't clear the motorcycle completely. Sat pinned in the road for a few minutes until my wife noticed me.

Luckily, my brand new (used) front wheel is OK!

Minor damage:
* Brake lever slightly bent
* Right peg slightly bent
* Right rear turn signal dangling by the wires (still functional)

My right foot was pined under the exhaust, so I think all the paint and shiny bits remained unblemished.

I did manage to ride to work after a few minute of picking myself up.

Anyone selling a right rear turn signal?
Can I bend the foot peg and brake lever back into shape?
Anything else I should look out for?

Yup,.. new tires are snot on snot slick...

You can bend the peg with a mallet... best to take it off, and pull the rubber part,.. then bash away...
Levers can usually bend back, too... if it breaks, they're pretty cheap to buy aftermarket...
Sorry,.. all out of rear signals...

Nice job not breaking yourself, too... ;)...

glad it was low speed & you're ok.

way too sacrifice your body to protect the chrome  :)

bummer it had to be your wife rescuing you!   :)

i went to (more or less) universal  aftermarket turnsignals after just such an accident.  I think i busted my left - not at all sure if i still have the right - i'll hunt for it tonight

well done for dealing with that situation.
I find this time the scariest as everyone is getting used to the start of the winter conditions.

Mold release compounds are incorporated into the first 3-5 thousanths of rubber on your new tires.  They spray mold release on the mold every cycle and it then gets baked into the rubber during curing.

If you could think of something slicker than mold release, the rubber industry wants you to share that information because they would turn around and use it for mold release.

Plus, we also tend to use soap (liquid detergent) when mounting our tires.  Did you wash off all the dried on liquid soap?

And you are not the first person to take a slippy dip on a newly installed tire, not by a long shot.

Glad you weren't hurt badly !!!    Show this to your wife so she won't worry about you unnecessarily, it was a freak occurrence that has a non-repeatable root cause.

Glad you are ok D.Dwarf.

Simple Green and a scouring sponge will take off the majority of the film, usually reducing the wear down time to around 40/50 miles instead of 200+ miles.  ;)

I don't think you need to do any donuts to impress the girl, she's already married to you.

Glad you are OK.

Heck FIRE,, thats Nothin,, I totaled a 73 Z28 on new tires, on a corner I went thru several times a day, goin to & comin from work. New Tires, not 10 miles on them, turned the wheel & it turned about 30 degrees,, I desperately needed that other 60..

Bent Bike will have the levers, should run about $13 per. Turn signal is a maybe, 07 is kinda new for them but I know they switched to Bike Master signals from Emgo.

Future reference. I grew up in Graham. I worked at bike shops out there off and on for years, including Auburn Bent Bike. I ALWAYS broke in fresh rear tires before they ever hit the pavement. Front wheel against the chimney or the pickup. Rear wheel on the grass. Slowly throttle it up to get the rear turning, when the tire digs in and starts steaming it's good to go. There is still some mold release but a lot of it seemed to out gas from the heat. Certain customers would have me do their tire the same way.

If you try it, have a spotter, pretty easy for the rear end to kick out.

Thanks everybody!

Now I just need to double check everything to see if I can get rid of this weird vibration at low speeds.
