Title: Messed up air fuel screw
Post by BOBD on 10/26/12 at 13:04:44

I have never screwed up an air/fuel mixture screw on my Yamaha's, but this S40 got me. I am officially an idiot. I have screwed up my air fuel mixture screw. I think it is turned out about 2 turns. Won't go in or out. Don't know if I can get it out or not. It is the BS (Bull S**t) 40 carb. Would it be better to replace it (with a different one) since they are crap anyway or try to get the screw out somehow and replace it. Probably cheaper. What would be the best carb. to replace it with?

will it not go in or out because the head is messed up?

did it come out all the way and get cross-threaded?  or is it just STUCK with a capital SSSSS.

It would only turn out to 2 1/2 turns and stop. It will go in, but if I do that it won't be able to come back out. Slot is f***ed.

I have read that article. I may try it if I find a new one to replace it. Maybe I won't since I could only get it to turn out to 2 1/2 turns in the first place. Might just run it the way it is.

Well,, nows yer chance! Now you can justify a Dremel or nearest clone. You can get some diamond dust impregnated ( & NO, you cant buy them & take them home & put them under a heat lamp & wait a year & get a 1/2 karat diamond from them) tips & rebuild the slot.

Clue, when a screwdriver slips, it takes a bit of the slot away. If it slips twice, its time to stop. A very careful hand with a file can shape a tip to grab in a slot. I guess I need to do a picture tutorial. Describing it would take an hour,, but, the short of it is.
Ya want the part in the bottom of the slot to be fatter than the rest of the blade ( not wider, fatter, across the small measurement) with an angle in, so the part at the bottom of the slot has an edge that bites into the slot. Do that on one end of one side & the other end of the other side, so it bites when youre backing it out,

Gotta have a vise & a small, Good file. Need a screwdriver with a tip that is as close to the width as the screw head as you can find. & it needs to soft enough the file will cut it. A tired old screwdriver isnt a good candidate, nor is one that is tapered from the shank into the tip with much angle, ya need the sides, as they slip into the slot, to be easy to cut so they dont start trying to Cam the blade up outta the slot.

The business end of this screwdriver will look funny when youre done,
