Title: Blown head gasket....
Post by Drifter on 10/21/12 at 11:13:00

Went for a ride today rolled over 13k miles soon after the engine started making a strange sound and i noticed oil coming out right under the carb...rode it home and took a look it is leaking around the base of the head.    :( :(

So my questions are do you have to pull the engine to get the head off, second question where to get cheap gaskets.  Is this normal for this engine with so few miles?

You sure it's not just the stinking head plug?

Not common at all...  before you get drastic,.. make sure...
Might just be an odd noise (speedo/belt/ whatever),.. and then you noticed a little leak that was there before...
Check for compression?..

If it's the head gasket,.. I believe you halfta' pull the engine.. even if you don't,.. I would anyway, 'cause it'll be easier...

best luck... ;)...

And check tongue on head bolts.

yep, double check the head plug 1st.
clean and watch for the leak.

otherwise, easier to pull the engine.

I'd bet my nickel's worth sight unseen on the fore aft nuts or the head plug -- if you really have a bad gasket you will have had the very first one we have really ever seen 'round here.

A real blown head gasket would make puff-pop NOISE and blow smoke and such like.  You ain't got that, right?

We have had occasional oil leaks that were fixed by tightening the upside down head mounting nuts fore and aft on the bottom of the head (them "other head bolts" that we don't talk about a whole lot).   You tighten these nut puppies down correctly and get back to us after a week or so.

IF your leak persists, and begins to show itself to be a little oil leak that washes away and re-appears by the exhaust pipe relief first then it is the infamous rubber plug leaking yet again.

Well i was having a bad day yesterday so i went for a ride to clear my head...right before the ride i removed the belt guards. At 50 mph in 5th gear the belt makes some strange noises...at the same time i looked down and saw oil everywhere so i assumed a blown head gasket........... after returning home and going back out into the shop today i tightened the fore and aft screws on the head cleaned up the oil mess and went for another 100 mile ride... :)

Good news no blown gasket it was the 2 head bolts that were loose causing the oil leak why they happened at that time i dont know.....karma i guess.....moral of the story dont over react untill all the facts are known.

Also a thanks to the savage group for the good advice.....no substitute for experience with these engines!!! ;)
