Title: Color of my pipe...
Post by stewmills on 10/19/12 at 15:46:55

2008 LS650. Stock with dynojet stage 1 kit, 1/3 white spacer mod, air/mix screw ~3/4 turn out (this is the sweet spot per the carb setting guide), Rotella T6.  Other than that, bike is stock and as far as I would say runs great.

So, why is my pipe getting this color?  I want to think that my fuel mixture is just right due to good running and as well I think I have dialed it in where it is not running too lean, but it seems I read somewhere that this indicates a lean condition because it is getting too hot and more fuel will allow for a cooler burn?

So...any suggestions?

That's pantywaist discoloring... you ain't riding hard enough... ;D...

It's better than normal for an average Savage...  Pipes will discolor if you idle in traffic,. or if you tend to ride in the mountains,.. or push it hard... no matter what you jet...

Thanks Serowbot. I don't idle a lot in traffic other than a few quick stoplights on my city commute (~35-40 mph average) to work.  Just making sure it isn't something small that needed tending to before it turned into something BIG.

OK...now that bike gets some serious riding!  Maybe one day I will wind it up one good time and give mine a little taste of that blueness!

Homemade mudflap?  Looks good, but do you ride in rain or mud to need that additional protection?

Stock, mine stayed a pristine chrome,, until 5,000 miles, when I was sitting in the driveway, trying to hear the valves, rappin it up,, When I looked on that side, my pipe was a deep bruised color,,& I was Mortfified,, The color hasnt changed, I am no longer mortified.

Honestly,.. some people think blue means lean...  it doesn't...
Gold, then blue, then blue/black,... just means degrees of hot...

I bought my bike with 3k pussyfoot miles on it...
The guy sold it because neither he nor the dealer could make it run right...
I,.. being the smartarse that I am, thought I could fix it easy with a carb rebuild... (I wasn't aware of this site, or vac petcocks at the time)...
Anyway,.. it took me about 2 weeks and half a tank of gas to figure out that the petcock was leaking down the vac line... during that time, (running super bad, and super rich), the pipe went blue/black...(from running way rich!)...

I leave it that way,... 'cause it's soooo pretty,... and I don't have to worry about it...
Same reason I don't want a temp gauge... I just don't want another thing to worry about...

Lesson,..
Enjoy the ride...  don't worry,... don't look for trouble...
If trouble comes, it'll let you know... without you having to go in search of...
This bike is pretty tough...
Just two weak points... cam chain adjuster, and petcock... and,.. it will let you know...
Relax,.. and enjoy...  that's why you have a bike...
...not to worry....
Peace,...
Serow... ;)...

Mine has no discoloration at all and I ride hard often. I ride hard in the hot summers here too. But I only live about 300ft up.

My 09  has 12,000 miles and is not discolored at all. It is stock and I live and ride at 2500 ft. Beats me, but I sure think the color looks better the why it came. Just my 2 cents.
