Title: Tuning an '88
Post by verslagen1 on 10/07/12 at 23:00:33

I was never very happy with the tune of the '88.
The engine was replaced with an '01 and now has a stage 1 cam.
MPG is just under 50.

It has a supertrapp with 14 disks. K&N drop in.
Originally had stock jets 47.5 and 155.
Main jet replaced with 152.5 and I've desnorkled and removed the air box door.

I bought an Innovate a/f meter and made an adapter to shove in between the header and muffler.

At idle, it reads ~9 and ~11 at 45 in 4th.

changed the main to 150 and now I've got ~14 at 45 in 4th

Seems my next step is to install a pod filter.

Verslagen is the '88 your main ride, or is this a side project?

14 is too lean, I tend to go a tad on the rich side for an air cooled motor myself, the 11 was better IMO, maybe just a touch leaner. A pod will make it leaner yet. So maybe your 155 with a pod would be about spot on. Although at 45 in 4th you're not really hitting the main jet much, mostly the needle. Main is only really going to give you a reading at WFO.

certainly feel the lean condition at speed.
going to put the 152 back in and lower the needle.

Are you talking about a meter similar to this?  http://www.ebay.com/itm/INNOVATE-MOTORSPORTS-3844-MTX-L-DIGITAL-AIR-FUEL-RATIO-GAUGE-KIT-8FOOT-CABLE-/120940724864?_trksid=p3284.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSI%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BUA%252BFICS%26otn%3D21%26pmod%3D200803518322%26ps%3D54

Do you have any pics of your installation?  I'm very curious to see your adapter.  Have you had any sealing issues?

No, I got a LM2.  wanted something for diagnosing, not permanent.

The bung sits in a 5" length of 1.625 pipe that's clamped between the header and muffler.  Requires that the front mounting bolt of the muffler mounted in the rear hole of the bracket.

Now if I can only figgure out how to get the induction clamp to work I'd be good to go.

verslagan_ when you say you're going to lower the needle are you increasing the size of the spacer or moving the eclip?  Or am I assfused? I've learned alot from your posts & by tearing my carb apart alot lol

I added a washer.  That and putting back the 152 has improved my up hill top speed.  88 vs 86  it was 85 with the 150.  it'll be the weekend before I can measure the a/f ratio.

My gas mileage has much improved since the last change, over 50 mpg.
Takes less than 2 gals to fill up vs. 2.2 for a 100 mile round trip.

Idle it's about 10 to 11, nary a need for choke except to get the idle speed up, which the 1st notch does nicely.

at 70 it's about 12 to 13
but if I go up to 80, it will go over 15.

seems to me I need to try the 155 again.

You ever get your jetting resolved? Im about to work on an older carb and most of the jetting posts are aimed at the newer models with leaner jetting.

it's gonna depend on your exhaust and intake.
with a supertrapp and k&n drop in filter... stock jets were ok.
slip on a dyna and you'll want to drop down to a 150

Im going to run a UNI foam air filter and a straight 1.75" exhaust (with a "lollipop" for backpressure). i know i will have to fine tune it but do you have any suggestions mainly for the pilot jet size? I just ordered a #50 to replace the stock #47.5
