Title: people on this Forum are AWSOME
Post by gdrseeker on 10/06/12 at 10:39:28

I just wanted to comment on how totally AWSOME you people here are.  I bought my bike about 2 months ago, and I have never ridden a motorcycle before.

The Motorcycle community is awesome but you people here and the information on this forum has been unbelievable.  I have learned so much so far I have done several changes and minor modifications.
I have made a few mistakes and had a few questions but everyone has been here with help, and answers.

I plan on doing my cam next.  Verslagen1 I will be letting you know during the winter season while I am not riding.

Special thanks to LANCER  :D

I think I will be here for a while.

This is what she looks like now

You can save $$$ On GAS,, But, you have an added vehicle to insure & register & maintain, & the cost of maintenance Per Mile is a Lot higher on a bike than a decent little car, PLUS you have to have a helmet & riding gear, wet weather stuff, cold weather stuff,, Its Not a $$$ saving operation,

YET,, when gas gets to $5.00 a gallon? Ohhh yea,,

Justin......What is the big idea bringing "reality" into the mix????

Yep, my nephew was saying he wanted to get a motorycle to save money on gas.  I pointed out that the only way that was really possible, was to use the motorycle to replace the car.....not supplement it.  My car gets 30 mpg....my motorcycle gets 54.....there is not enough difference to make up for the extra cost of the motorycle, insurance, license and taxes.  Having a motorycle is my hobby however.....and that is where I spend my "discretionary income" and "fun money".

Well, lets see.  I have a Prius that gets about 50 mpg.  I have a Savage that gets about 50 mpg  THe Prius is about $150 year to register.  The Savage is $20 a year to register.  The insurance on the Prius is around $600 a year.  The insurance on the Savage is around $90 a year.  That is why I put about 5-7000 miles a year on the Prius, and around 15-20000 miles a year on the Savage.  the Savage is definitely my transportation.  The Prius is backup and when hauling other people.  I ride the Savage every day.  Often a week or more will go by when I do not drive the Prius.  Hmmmmm

Not sure exactly what you are sayin'......except that you would save $ 640 a year if you sold the Prius and kept the Savage.  It is not cheaper to own both, as they get the same MPG.  And to really make it an accurate comparison....maintenance costs for oil changes, tires, tune-ups, etc. need to be figured in.
For me it is not a money saving incentive to own the motorcycle.....it is my "affordable mental health plan".

Well, I drive a Jeep Wrangler as a project, and because I didn't want to pay the gas for a full sized truck. Then I realized bigger tires and lifts and etc, etc. result in the same freakin' gas mileage as the truck I didn't get... :'( I don't care if the math works out or not. Psychologically the "I'm saving gas by riding my motorcycle" is healthy for me.
Plus, I get to ride my motorcycle....
And ditto the "folks are awesome here" theme. I rode other bikes and joined other forums before this one, but it is night and day how helpful folks have been. And it's nice to get the help without the helper looking down their nose at you the entire time.

Hmm... preferred truck gets 8 mpg on a good day, down hill with a strong tail wind... daily driver truck gets 23 mpg...Savage with 15" apes still got right around 36 mpg the last time I rode it...

Insurance? Preferred truck no longer sees the pavement, so N/A... daily driver (plus her car with comprehensive) is $53/month... Bike is sub-$90 for a year.

Truck tires for the Ranger are $111/ea. Bike tire is $40. Dodge takes 9 qts of oil, bike takes 2. Dodge burns/loses about a quart between oil changes (really filter change and top off), bike a couple teaspoons. Ranger oil consumption is all over the place.

Does the bike save me any money? Not really, when I'm using it I tend to really pile on the miles, so annual operating costs are about the same for 98 Savage, 94 Ranger (4cyl 5 spd) and 69 D100 (318 w/auto 3 spd).

Real bonus to having the bike? I can mess with it to my heart's content and not have the wife fuss at me as much as when I mess with the trucks.  ;D
