Title: Which side do you mount your bike and why?
Post by Greg on 09/22/12 at 07:08:38

Since I have added a rider's backrest I think it is easier for me to mount from the high (right) side and dismount from the left. What do you do?

Always mount from the left. Keeps your leg away from the exhaust if it's hot, easier to throw your leg over, bike is less likely to tip if you are on the left.
Always dismount to the left for the above reasons + if the kick stand is going to go into soft ground you will notice and be able to stop the bike from tipping.

+1,.. like a horse...

Although,.. yesterday, a buddy parked a bit too close, and I ended up doing a right-side mount... but it's very awkward for me...

From the left. Im moving toward the bike, plant the left foot, reach for & squeeze the brake & start putting pressure  on the handlebars while my foot is still clearing the seat, IOW, I use my approach/mount to help me get it stood up.

From the left.
I've been known to ill manage my time and taken a rolling start on the left.
Hot exhaust is hot. And on the right.
I've heard it comes, as above, from horses.
More specifically cavalry riders kept their swords on the left for right hand draw.
And look at it on the stand, slouching towards the left, inviting you, tempting you...

If I mount mine from the right, the darn thing bucks me off.

the left is the only right way...

I often mount from the right. I often find myself on the right when I am ready to go so I just slid my foot over. Knock on wood I have yet to have a problem with the exhaust. I do however make my daughter mount from the left when she is riding with me...

Well, after numerous mounts and dismounts today, I have decided to keep to the left as well. Since I am used to holding the brake lever when I mount, it seems much more natural from the left. I just need shorter turn signal stems as I keep catching the right one when I mount from the left with the rider's backrest in place.

Guess I'm an ambidextrous mounter of the bike.  Most of the time I mount it from the left but I do often mount it from the right as well.

I have a hard time believing no one here jumps off the house onto it,

From the left, instinctive from horse back ridding and just seems more stable.

The left is always easier for me. I think the lean on the stand has something to do with it.

Whenever I try mounting from the right side,...
I end up facing backwards... :-?...

I like popping clutch and doing a rolling mount, ala Roy Rogers style.   8-)

Seriously, with my arthritis it all depends on which leg hurts the least and my ability to raise it.   One thing nice about the Zuk is you have the option of R/L mounting.  On my beemer (GS) I can't even throw a leg over without standing on the peg first (kickstand down).   This pretty much precludes a right side mount.

I've been paying more attention to which way I normally mount the bike since this thread popped up and I posted,  seems I tend to mount it from the right side more often then not.  I almost always get off on the right side because doing that I don't tend to drag my foot across the seat.  I think the reason I find myself mounting from the right more often is because that is the side of the bike I approach it from when I'm going out to it from the house.

Now when I give my kids a ride or take them anywhere on it I make them mount it from the left side since they have to use the pegs to get on and also to keep them away from the exhaust.  My daughter found out the hard way that the muffler gets darn hot,  she decided to try and put her right leg down on the ground one day while messing with her helmet getting ready to leave from a store.

Generally the left, but in a pinch I will climb on from the right.

I am sure there are rules about which side to get off and on, in fact a fellow told me about them once, but I forgeot what he said.

I always get on and off the left side, kickstand side of the bike.  I think, just never really thought about it too much.

However, when I get home I ALWAYS get off the right side of the bike.  When I get backed in under the carport, the wall is on the left.  :)

Same here.

I've always been used to mounting from behind, but my MSF instructor told us to mount form the left.  First squeeze the break & mount up.

Either side, sometimes just straddle it from the rear and sit down. Depends on which joints are acting up at the moment.

My horses were always trained to be mounted from either side. And to be roping or shooting platforms. Always had working horses, no time or money for ones that couldn't earn their keep.

I mount from the right always because of back problems. I cannot clear the seat as easily from the right and it sometimes hurts. One thing I don't believe we mentioned is grabbing the front brake before you mount to avoid an embarrassing "kick stand roll-off" if you happened to leave it in neutral. Newbies or people who want to learn by watching should check out www.Monkey See.com. I have mentioned it several times on here, but it's been awhile.  :)

I agree Boofer. No matter what side, always apply the front brake.
