Title: Help please choosing exhaust
Post by tonewheelmonster on 09/20/12 at 19:03:53

I'm looking to upgrade from the stock exhaust to something a little less lawnmowerish.

so far it looks like this will fit
http://www.motosport.com/cruiser/Jardine-Rumblers-SlipOn-Slashcut-Exhaust

I also see that the Harleys can fit on there.
I don't really want to be the loudest on the block I just want a little rumble so cars at least know i'm not riding a scooter.

I'm also looking for something that isn't going to be a massive overhaul.  Is the slip on really that?  or does it require cutting and welding?

For now, simple is the name of the game.

Any advice or suggestions are quite welcome

I have the blue collar bobber drag pipe on mine, pretty good sound without being overwhelming. Easy to install, but you really need to re-jet the carb after installing.  Here is a helpful link for exhaust sounds.

The Jardine you linked to is extremely loud like obnoxiously loud. If you look in the Tech section there is a thread on the Dyna mufflers that will tell you which ones will fit.

I cut the baffle out of mine and was happy.

The Dyna looks nice on this bike. It opens it up some, for a deeper tone, w/o the raucous roar that will have people sitting at the lite next to you wishing you would drop dead. Its cheap, too, so, if you try it & dont like it, youre not out a load O $$$.
Call around to HD shops or anyone who works on them. Guys buy a new HD & ride them straight to be "customized"..

Thanks everyone.  What kind of work is required to put on the dyna muffler?  Are they all the same or do I need a specific one?

Welcome to the Savage Site.

Spend some time looking through the Technical Section.  Go to the exhaust section.....and you will find the information on the Dyna Muffler installation.

There may be another one out there, but, IMO, its either Dyna or Supertrapp.
Best bang for the buck? Hands down, Dyna & I think its better lookin that then Trapp. & I have a TRapp.,

I admire you for that,.. JOG... ;)...

Gerry H. has a S-trap... and since I'm his mechanic, I've learned a bit about them...
Good fit, good performance... but, poor quality, and they blow out the packing pretty quick...
We've had to re-weld the disc holding bolts... and re-packed several times...(never seems to last long)....
Gerry is considering... re-pack again,... (this time with steel),.. or swap to a Harley shorty...
The Harley muff, is cheaper than a re-pack... and will outlast it.
Excellent quality on the chrome with a Harley...
I'm not a Harley fan,... but those muffs are top flight...
Harley guys are nuts for replacing them...
;)...

Call around to the bike shops. Guys buy a new HD & have the mufflers replaced with something more,, whatever,, expensive, I guess.. the HD shop may have a take off for $20.00,, dont just up & tell them ya want it for rice burner,, its okay if they think you have a HD & need a new one, or ask if they have a pair,,heck,, have a spare for $20.00,, you can sell it,Ir save it for the off chance you mess that one up.

I snagged a used Jardine from one of the members here...love it.  Yeah, it's just shy of obnoxiously loud under hard throttle.  It's got a lot more midrange tone than low frequency tone, but I quite like it's bubbly, echo-ey percussive mean-ness.  8-)

I had to cut a little bit of aluminum flashing and wrap it to get it to seal properly to the header pipe, but all it took was the aluminum flashing and some tin snips.

I'm trying to decide between the Jardine and the Dyna  or drilling my stock exhaust. I want my bike loud but not unable to hear anything else loud. The issue is that I also want a lower pitch too and I've heard the Jardine doesn't do that too well.

I have searched but haven't really found a great comparison between the too. what is the difference in pitch and loudness between the two and the stock muffler.

Jardine, $$$, Dyna, cheap. TRy it, you mite like it.,

Title: Re: Help please choosing exhaust
Post by Dave Sisk on 09/25/12 at 07:23:18

Well, I'd drill your stock exhaust first since that's essentially free.  ;)  If you don't like it, no harm done.  (You may have to adjust the fuel/air mix...check the tech section for a great post on that.)  I drilled mine (4 holes 1/2" diameter), and it was a little louder and a little deeper....didn't sound like I was riding a sewing machine anymore.  ;D  However, because of the internal baffles, the stock exhaust drilled has this VW Beetle-ish "ping" to the exhaust note, which I didn't like.

If you want to hear what it sounds like with nothing, take the header pipe loose and rev it a few times.  Now that's LOUD.  Quite surprisingly obnoxiously loud.  I'd say the stock exhaust cuts out 90% of the sound...stock exhaust mod maybe cuts 70-80% of the volume...the Jardine prob only cuts maybe 30-40% of the volume (it's loud, but not as loud as no pipe at all).  The Jardine tone is very *percussive*...that's the best word I can think of to describe it. You can definitely hear it's echoes when you go under an overpass, for instance.

I don't know about the Dyna's, but lots of folks really seem to really like them.

Dave

Well I guess this weekend I'll drill it then and fiind out if I like it.

So I know this is probably in the tech section but since everyones talking about exhausts, what is the diameter on the stock exhaust?

would this be a good fit?   http://www.amazon.com/Emgo-Shorty-Universal-Motorcycle-Muffler/dp/B003NQAJPY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1348623665&sr=8-3&keywords=emgo

Anyone have any experience with emgo?  the price looks right  ::)

I just happened to measure the stock exhaust last night.  The end of my header is slightly egg shaped.......probably not unusual.  The diameter measured a minimum of 1.665" and a maximum of 1.692".  The closest fractional equivalent I would guess would be 1-11/16".....which calculates to 1.6875".

I bet that Emgo is going to be really loud!  Their megaphone shaped muffler are 5" longer and loud.

I've been very happy with my MAC muffler.  It appears they've added a slash-cut variety since I bought mine.  At that time, they only had the taper tip for the LS650.

http://www.macperformance.com/Savage-650_c160.htm

However, as pointed out already, the Dyna is definitely less expensive.  It's also a bit quieter/mellower than the MAC, though only a bit.

I started off drilling holes in the stocker. Didn't care for the sound at all. Check around on ebay. I picked up a harley dyna muffler for $20 there. It was in great shape, sounds real good and was an easy install. Good luck on your tone quest.

How does this one sound pitch and volume wise?

IMO, the stock unit is just plain ugly. It is not my opinion that its heavy, thats a fact. The Dyna is a nice lookin muffler, sounds good, IIRC its about 4 pounds liter. It fits the bike. These arent big honkin heavy bikes, why put a chrome trash can on it & call it a muffler?

I bet it is rediculously loud and lawnmowery, and probably sounds like an obnoxious 4 stroke quad.

I just had this one installed on my bike.
http://www.nichecycle.com/mmNCS/Images/80-84051_reverse_cone_dunstall_1.JPG
It looks great, It is much louder at idle, and taking off, and enough to annoy people in town. When you take an exit ramp off the highway that's where this thing really sounds cool.
I don't know if it is any deeper than stock sound, probably about the same tone, but just way more obnoxious, but definately not the most obnoxious I have heard. It is about 28 inches long and comes out just past my back brake arm.
So based off that I would imagine not only would anything smaller be way more rediculously obnoxious, but also pretty harsh on your own ears being it will be closer to them because it is physically smaller. Mine is also muffled some to my own ears by saddle bags.

Come to think of it, tone wise it sort of sounds like an old 12hp riding mower I had with a rotted muffler. It is definately louder though, and slightly more refined, but not much.

By the way anything other than stock is going to require a pice inbetween the end of the headpipe and the muffler or modifiying the headpipe to get a decent angle, so it is not a matter of does the muffler fit the headpipe.

Steer clear of Emgo mufflers if you actually like chrome. They are plated in the softest grade you can find, and don't have a proper copper - nickel- chrome job. They scratch, they rust, they rot out. If you like the style but could not care less about the chrome, buy one and paint it with bbq paint. The set up on mine is at least 12 years old and has not rusted through yet. The stock muffler was rotted out in 6 months (replaced under warranty the first time, with aftermarket stuff the second time). Tone will change pretty quickly, the packing is way yonder the wrong side of low quality.

Buy a MAC or an HD Dyna take off. Cheaper in the long run, they'll outlast a low end import unit by several years.

Do you know of anyone who makes this style muffler in better quality? I just really dig the long skinny reverse cone look.

Here's what mine looks like if anyone wanted to see.

Well.....If I had a bunch of money.......It sure would be cool to get one of these made.  I am guessing they would be loud as they use stainless millings they call "scrubble" as the packing......but it sure would be pretty if you had it buffed to a stainless shine.

Ive installed a emgo shorty with the ryca 10 degree adapter ez to line up but hard to keep packing inside, had a crumb trap wielded in for a little more back preasure  but next time would wield a 4"to 6" can open type  baffle instead! like the look's of the shorty but for the time and money it's seames hard to beat the dyna muffler.

I don't know anyone making a good Dunstall that isn't really pricey. If I ever get my parallel twin going again I'll spring for the pricey ones. My bike sounds like a small helicopter with the pipe set up I use.

Which is this monstrosity...
http://ravenscroftart.net/watchtower/pokeydone1.jpg Emgo 12" shorty glass pack, 29" fishtail pipe with a weld in "stick stopper" or "beer can" baffle (depends on what catalog it comes from). Handful of copper scrubbing pads and a couple stainless steel ones to add some back pressure and mellow it out.

Can you link me to a pricey Dunstall muffler that looks like the Emgo one? I really like the look and the sound is starting to grow on me. It sort of sounds like a cross between my dad's old XT550, his old 12hp Toro mower, and a really ballsy 4 stroke quad in the lower rpm's.
I do already see some of the chrome getting a brownish hue, and there is already about 1/4" surface rust on the weld that attatches the rail mount slot.

Or is there anything I can have done to an Emgo one to make the chrome better? I would spend $60 on another one and have it done.
