Title: Retarded question. Need an answer asap. thanks.
Post by Blue04Savage on 09/19/12 at 18:34:25

Alright, well this is going to make me sound like a retard but.... lol

I took the exhaust off, removed the heat shield where the muffler meets the down pipe (I didn't realize I didn't have to take the exhaust off to get that piece off), and threw it all back on after tightening up the clamp on the muffler/downpipe gasket.  I fired the bike back up, and naturally, it wasn't coming from the gasket after all.

I can feel exhaust puffing out of the actual muffler, right where there are the holes cut on the outer shield of the muffler.

STUPID QUESTION BUT....

There shouldn't be any exhaust coming out from there right?  Is my muffler just trashed?  I mean the only exhaust should be excaping out the tailpipe right?  The bike only has 4,000 on it, so this just seems weird to me.  I just thought i'd ask you all incase this is some strange, but normal for these bikes, thing. ??????????????

Naturally I already ordered gaskets, and have to cancel the order now. lol

Sorry for the stupid question......thanks.

Ok, thanks.  It doesn't look rusty, but perhaps it's at the bottom of the inner pipeing where I can't really see.

I really didn't want to go shopping for anything for this bike.  lol  I don't plan on keeping it long term.  It's just not big enough for me.  Perhaps a harley muffler, and rejet is in the future.

Thanks.

Are there any mufflers that I can just bolt right up to it for CHEAP, that will also sound better?  Preferably something that wouldn't need a retune if possible?

Probably no right?  I just don't want to invest into this bike really if I don't have to.  Seems I might have to though.  Any idea how much I could pick up a dyna muffler, and new jets for?  JW

Does it bolt up to the bracketing ok?  Otherwise you just have the bolts at the head holding it on, which isn't much.  I was thinking if i put a new muffler on, that I would just have someone weld on a couple bolts so that it can still bolt up to the stock bracket.  Ideas?

Thanks.

Used stock mufflers are a dime a dozen, and wouldn't require a rejet. :-/

True Salb.  I may just do that.  I'd probably end up with something that leaks also.  It's just weird as hell to me because mine looks perfectly fine.  I can't find a spot of rust on it, and the whole bike only has 4k on it.  Yet the $#%$#%#$ thing leaks somewhere I can't see.  POS.

Check Lancer out in the Market here on the forums.   He's got a set of the common ones that you would need for adjustment for $20 shipped

I read your write up in the tech section serowbot.  Very good I might add.  I thought it'd be more complicated than that.  Maybe i'll just do that.

Paraquat: Thanks.  I didn't know what they cost.

To Blue04Savage :
My used stock muffler is better than a dime-a-dozen.
Its free if you want it.
It came as part of a complete exhaust system
but I only needed the header pipe to do my
Harley muffler install.
The muffler is a little banged up and has some
scratches but it should be a bolt-on for you.

PN: 14-4104-01
Slip-on Slashcut Exhaust, Chrome by Jardine. It's made for the S40/Savage to bolt right on. Several places on internet to get one. I'm getting one next month. I will do 150 main jet and maybe 55 pilot jet.
