Title: Another "Bike won't start" thread...
Post by Savage 1987 on 09/19/12 at 07:40:19

I have done a RYCA conversion on my savage and it has been running without any issues since I completed it (about 4 months now).

Just recently it has been unable to start.  I haven't even started physically troubleshooting, just mental troubleshooting.  Here is what's happening.

-when I switch the key on, my headlight goes on, my gauges light up.  everything seems normal.

-when I hit the start button, I get nothing. no clicks, no noises, not even an attempt to turn over.  My manual decompression lever is engaged.

-to me it seems this is an electrical problem.

Are there any good ways to test the starter motor, solenoid, and relay?  I guess I should also take the start button apart to make sure the wires are all in place.

Any ideas for me are much appreciated.

Thanks.

Yes, Clymer manual shows how to test all electrical components. You should be able to get a copy online somewhere.

start with the safeties.
clutch in
neutral
and if that don't work, kickstand up

You can short the clutch safety to see if it works or use an ohm meter to verify it works.
neutral light on?
kickstand safety can be shorted to

Safeties. >:(

neutral light is on.  I forgot about the kickstand safety.  I am pretty sure I bypassed it when I was doing the conversion, so I will have to go back and check that connection.

Just went through a whole lot of electrical testing.

It was the Clutch In safety.  There was a loose connection there which explains why it was very erratic at times.

Thanks everyone.

I undid all those safeties in the Double RYCA build.  Lucky for me I developed most of my motorcycle operation habits back in the 1960's when there were NO safeties at all,.. well,.. until the Japs started taking everything over.  My first real motorcycle was a 1964 Ducati 250 Monza.  No safeties at all.  It had a left-footed kick starter, though, with no electric start, so you were never in much danger of getting the started and shooting forward all of a sudden.  Anyway, that is where I picked up the habit of rolling the bike forward or back a foot or so with the clutch out to make sure it was in neutral.  blah blah blah
