Title: Tune up?
Post by CJB368 on 09/16/12 at 17:23:58

I just got a 2007 s40 with 750 miles on it.The bike is in real nice shape. It is a bit of of a jumpy/knocking type ride(not smooth acceleration)is this normal for a single or does it need a tune up.I doubt the previous owner did much with such low miles. It is my first bike and Im not much of a mechanic. Thx

Jumpy right off the line or jumpy all the time?

what do mean "jumpy/knocking" ?

it feels almost like its not getting enough fuel.it gets better after it warms up,but its not real smooth, hard to explain. It is the worst when its on the cold side,it gets better but even at higher rpm it feels sluggish.

That's really low miles for that year bike, how long did it sit before you bought it?........ old gas?   :o

Im not sure how old the gas was,I filled it with fresh gas,It wasnt a dealer sale, but a dealer salesman sold it to me. said maint was done to the bike,im not so sure .Think I should take it for a once over at a mechanic? or is that a waste.

Youll be ahead to solve this at home. You topped it off with fresh gas, but gas has been sitting in it a long time. YOu bought a bike that is low mileage, but its so low mileage that what it is is, documented neglect. Put some Sea Foam in it & run it thru a tank, do that a few times if need be,Tractor supply sells it for $10.00, parts stores are $13.00. Someone will be along shortly to tell you it doesnt do anything,,dont listen. I thot the same thing. My backhoe sounded like it was about to throw a chunk thru the block, I tried several injector cleaners, several times. I dumped some Sea Foam in it & could hear a difference in a few minutes. Ive run 3 thru it now & it sounds great,,
Dont go dumpin any car oil in it, stick with Motorcycle wet clutch approved stuff.
Regular gas, your baby doesnt need "the best".

The diaphragm on the petcock may not have survived the sitting with old gas eating on it, do the petcock test.
Serowbot will point the way.,,.

I'll risk displaying my ignorance. Are you pushing the choke all the way in after a couple of miles?

choke in

Choke in or on or out? If the choke is in, it is out. If the choke is out, it is in... ::)

Push in-no choke
pull out-choke

all the way pushed in

If its out, then what?

I'm seeing the same sort of thing on my 05.  I start up (choke out one click), let it warm up for about 4-5 min, choke in, take off.  For the first 5 min or so of my ride, the bike is "jumpy" or what I would describe as "jerky".  After that (at this point, I'm on the highway during my normal commute), it gets more smooth but the jerkiness never quite goes away completely.

I haven't gotten to the bottom of this issue on my bike.  I bought it about 3 months ago and made sure to change the oil and air filter (easy stuff).  I gave it one treatment of Sea Foam and that didn't seem to really have any effect.  I'll give the Sea Foam another round, given what I've read here.  At some point soon, I plan on doing that petcock test.

Let us know if you figure anything out, CJB.

Does the jumpiness go away when you apply a lot of throttle?  Is the jumpiness most noticeable when trying to ride at a steady speed?

I am remembering the stock motor when new, it always did the rough jerky stuff when it first started out.   I remember watching the gas tank jerk in its rubber mounts when first accelerating away from the stop sign at the end of my street and again at the end of my neighborhood, so it took a minute or so to go away, always.  It happened when I short shifted, too.

Miles on the odometer is what helped the issues.   So did modding the carb and airbox and exhaust system.   But it was mostly just piling on the miles and learning to run the engine up some in RPM before shifting.

What stopped it completely was the stage 2 cam which causes you to HAVE to run extra rpms at each gear -- so the issue can be stated as you lugging the engine somewhat at the start of each gear.

Try intentionally running higher rpm shift points and see if it helps you out.

I can attest that on my bike, the jumpiness occurs at steady speeds AND at the mid-high range of RPMs.  In my case, it's not because of lugging.  It's most noticeable in the lower gears and much less noticeable in 4th and 5th.  When I apply a lot of throttle, the jumpiness goes away.

Dennis,

Did your new air filter ever come in?   Did replacing it affect your issues?

Most likely this is what we call surging, can be fixed with the white spacer mod.

Oldfeller, I did replace my air filter with another stock filter but it change anything.  I gave it one shot of Sea Foam a little while ago and I don't think that really improved things but I'm planning on giving the Sea Foam another go today.

My plan of attack is to check the petcock next.  If that isn't conclusive, I'm going to think about the white spacer mod.

Good to see you have a measured plan of attack and that you are following along it step by step.

Easy things first, tougher things as necessary .....
