Title: Smiles after going synthetic
Post by ToesNose on 09/13/12 at 17:57:22

WARNING-THIS IS NOT AN OIL WAR CATALYST!
This is just my experience going from Dino to Synthetic

When I bought my bike a few months ago I hadn't found the wonderful community here are SuzukiSavage.com yet and changed my oil following the guidelines in the owner's manual and used Suzuki Performance 4-cycle 10W40.  Now that I've been on here and read many threads on oils and such and now know about the needed ZDDP levels and pros and cons of using different oils I changed my oil and used Rotella T-6.

WOW I guess it was just switching to a full synthetic oil but my bike is more alive!   I'm completely flabbergasted at the difference right after changing the oil.  The bike shifts smoother (I no longer have to finagle the shifter into 1st gear and changing from 1st to 2nd is so much better too), it feels faster and more responsive on the throttle, and I was able to turn my idle down to 1200Rpm and have it nice and smooth(had it between 1300/1400 before)

                       :)               :)          :)      :D      :)         :)               :)

I had the same experience when I switched to T6. Does it sound like the valve train runs quieter as well?

Nothing makes me happier than cheap happiness.. Gotta be careful tho, get too much happiness at too low a price & happiness escalates into giddiness &, well,, it can get embarrassing..

That's where and what I paid OF!   :D

@ Ralfyguy hard to say as I had the voltmeter gauge insert off to cast a mold when I took it for a ride  :o

dumb question (as i do not own this bike just yet...maybe this weekend!).  but do you change the oil filter each oil change as well?  what brand is recommended?

Not really a dumb question as people recommend to use the filter twice. I never heard that until I came here however I do know a slightly dirty filter works best at filtering out small particulates.

I have been thinking about changing oils and hope to get the same benefits, but not sure if I am ready for the switch.

Question for you experienced guys (and gals).....I have a 2008 that I changed the oil in at ~400 miles (after it was stored for 4 years) with factory recommended oil from the dealership. It was then serviced for the 600 mile check-up and changed again at with factory recommended oil.

The bike now has ~1050 miles on it.  Would it be advisable to jump to Rotella T or Rotella T6 at this mileage, or am I risking damage since the bike is still being sorta broken in and may not like a change in fluids this early in the game?

Thanks man   :)
That one is for a super mini 1 1/2" gauge, I've started working on the mock up for a 2 1/16" version since that seems to be the most common accessory gauge size  ;)
It's all in the Speedo/Tach post here-

The How To steps, materials used, would be something I would like to read about.

Hey JOG I'm going to be selling the Gauge Inserts for  1 1/2" Super Mini and 2 1/16" Regular size for $69 each including shipping. (hoping to start on the 2 1/16" prototype next week)

As far as how I made the first prototype it's mostly there in that thread. I started with a paper mock up to get the angles right, then moved on to a cardboard shell and built it up with bondo. Scraped the first one after not liking the angle of the gauge which wound up being too high and angled back to much to read easily while riding. So started number two cardboard shell at a lesser angle.  After about a dozen sessions of sanding and reapplying to get it where I wanted it I then primed it sanded it and started again with any spots that needed filling or shaping.  Eventually did two layers of primer and hammered metal spray paint to get the surface texture the way I wanted it, at least close to looking like the surface texture of the gas tank plastic console. And finished it off with a semi-flat paint.  Probably around 22 hours into it at this point.

I have it pulled off the bike and was hoping to make the mold of the 1 1/2" prototype this week, but my little boy has been under the weather    :'(  And had a friend of the family need my help getting her massage studio ready for her grand opening too.  So just a buisy week all in all.

Heck,, thatrs cool,.. BUt the looks made me think youd built it up with cardboard & bondo, then made a negative mold of that, then poured the REal Deal in the mold. Its really a nice job, 22 hours is reasonable for such an outcome,
