Should I be concerned about the engine temp of my S40? It's a 2012 with only 400 miles, I'm sure its nothing to worry about right now.

What's the expected operating temp, and would it be worth while to get an infrared thermometer from Home Depot to check it? (feel free to move to Technical if this really belongs there)

In a word, no. Don't worry about it. And even if you do worry, there's nothing you can actually DO about it.

I have read of many Forum members buying an oven meat thermometer, the kind you stab into the Sunday roast. ;)

Should read 120°F-300°F or thereabouts to make sense.

You stick it between two cooling fins (possibly on the back of the cylinder) and tie down tightly with steel wire.

I have one or two but haven't really gotten down to the stuffing ! :D

By the way... did I read somewhere that the RED light in the instruments binnacle, the one next to the GREEN Neutral light, is for excessive oil temperature ?

I always thought it was for the side stand down, but my Savage was bought 6th/8th hand with all sorts of (bad and wrong) mods to it...

In this case, WHERE is the temperature sensor ?

I'm sure that was a kickstand down light.
and would be pretty surprised if it were a temperature light.

If it were anything else, it would be a oil pressure light.

Best not to know.. after all,.. what'cha' gonna' do about it?.. Park it?..

I ride in S.Az... I wouldn't worry about Glendale, unless you ride 4th of July parades...

Since I have my original Speedo off, I just took a look at it. There is a hard plastic plug behind that location so no light. I pulled the plug and shined my flashlight in there and it's a blacked out lens. My Savage is a 96' and appears this position is just a blank that might be used on some other application then the Savage.

it's been blacked out since '87 as far as I know.

According to Clymer, it was a "Sidestand Check Light" on the '86. Since then Suzuki has used the sidestand interlock instead. I suppose it would be possible to rig a light in the location and wire it to warn you about something of your choice. Maybe a "Park" light to warn you you turned the key the wrong way on shutdown. Whatever you use it for, you have to devise a sensor or switch to turn it on, and use a wiring disconnect to make tank removal possible.

Unless youre riding in a parade for an hour at 3 MPH , dont sweat it. Ride it, dont leave it idling sitting still for extended periods ( or a long time, either). Its an air cooled engine, sold all over the world & has been for around 20 years. No reports of engine overheat failures, that I know of.
