Title: Trail Tech Vapor Speedometer
Post by ColoS40Girl on 09/08/12 at 17:48:46

I am new to this forum.  I have been lurking around for a while.  I am wondering if anyone has installed a Trail Tech Vapor speedo on their S40.  I just ordered one and noticed there are several mounts that I can buy.  If anyone has one installed, please post some pics.  Thanks

Here is mine.   FYI you will need to add 600K ohm resistor in-line on the tach signal wire to get a reliable tach reading.

Clearush has some, but I haven't seen any pics.

RFW 2003

How is it mounted on your handlebars?  I know the center is thicker than 7/8" or 1.25" so I can't clearly see the mount. Also, is that the indicator mount protector you are using which costs about $59.95?  Thanks

I used the 1.25" mount that came with it.  Just put some rubber shim in there to make up the difference. Yes that is the Trail Tech indicator panel they show on their site.   One mod you have to make to it if you don't re-wire your savage to get rid of the kickstand diode is to isolate one of the lights out the the harness so that it can have a separate ground from the other ones.   The harness as is, has the lights grouped into 2 for combining the grounds.

that because I haven't gotten around to taking them  :P keep forgetting ...

if you want the tach to work you need this http://www.trailtech.net/7000-1020.html

as for mounting I went cheap and crappy using the the plate mount http://www.trailtech.net/022-OEB2.html and dremmeled it till it fit between the risers and then just used self tapping screws to bolt it to the triple tree.

I will probably get one of the protectors later.

Thank you RTF 2003 and ClearRush

I will have my brother in law install it as stated.  ClearRush, I take it I have to pay extra for those wires and they are not a part of the kit?  Also, PLEASE post some more pictures.  I want the Vapor to be mounted where I can see it without looking straight down. Thanks again!

If you or your brother-in-law can solder then you can do your own resistor cable for less then $1.   Just place 600K ohms worth of resistors in the Red wire that goes from the coil to the trail tech computer.   I used 2 1m ohm resistors in parallel and then 1 100K in series to that to get the 600K ohm resistance.  So there is no real need to order the wire kit for the 700 Raptor to get it to work correctly.

If you don't use the $15 wire kit, or DIY it with the 600K ohm resistor then the tach will be all over the place.

Also if you get the idicator panel for it,  it comes with both regular bulbs which aren't bright enough to see in the day, and LED's that are.

The biggest complaint I have with this unit, is the Ambient air temp does not read anywhere near reliable.  Mine is constantly showing the temps very high compared to what it actually is, for instance on a 90°F day it shows anywhere between 110°F and 125°F for the outside temp.

With the plastic handle bar mount that comes with it,  you can easily adjust the angle of it to best be visible for your own comfort.  Mine is angled some so that I don't have to look straight down at it, it also helps greatly to reduce sun glare when mounted this way.  Later on I may fab an aluminum bracket at the correct angle since I really don't like the plastic mount that it comes with.

Thanks RFW 2003.  My brotherr-in-law is good with electronics and wielding  so he should be able to take care of the wiring.   I thought the indicator protector cover came with a metal plate. At least that is what is shown on the website.  Also, I plan to call Trail Tech and inquire about the temperature issue just to see what they will say.  However, if that is the only thing that is not accurate I am good with it.

The indicator panel does come with a metal plate for mounting,  but I found it not really to my liking because it mounts it flat only, so I used the stock plastic handlebar mount that is also included

RFW is the sender/pick-up for the temp internal or external?  You might be able to extend the wire and relocate it somewhere like under the rear fender under the pass. seat, it won't get direct sunlight or ambient heat from the engine there.  I actually had to do that on my Jeep it was in a spot that collected heat from the sun and engine compartment originally.

it's internal to the unit. :/

You still might be able to relocate it, if it's just a sensor/pick-up at the end of a write and not on the control board    ;)
