Title: ToesNose tach & speedo
Post by ToesNose on 08/23/12 at 18:48:17

OK finally got around to starting a post for the tach, speedo & stuff since I've had some time to work on it this week and have time to kill this evening   :D

I purchased the gauges from Dime City Cycles, the extended speedo cable which is a tach cable from a 73-77 GT 550 off FleaBay along with a Raptor petcock.

Speedo- wanted a speedo and idiot lights on the bar in periferal view, plus an odo $67.95 http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-electronic-parts-mini-chrome-white-face-speedo-speedometer-490291.html

Tach- I know it's not needed, but hey I wanted one  ;)  $68.95 http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-electronic-parts-mini-chrome-white-face-tach-tachometer-49-0293.html

I had read up on all the Tach related posts I could along with talking to a few friends who are mechanics and Emailing the guys at Dime City Cycles to nail down if this Tach would work, everything pointed to the fact that it would so I purchased it.   I wanted to mount them on the bars and although there have been a number of people that have done the same in the past and had vibration issues, both with the gauges not functioning properly and the lights shaking dead, I wanted them up there and without the extra rubberized anti-vibration mounts that many people use. Worst case cenario I replace the bulbs with LED and or swap to the anti-vibration mounts later.  :P

The
only thing that I had to do to modify the mounts to fit was cut the rounded bottoms off the mounts. I just took them off with a Dremel, easy peasy.

Pulled the seat/tank and just wired everything onto the consol plug. The only thing I did different was I made the oil temp idiot light on the new speedo my left turn signal, I didn't feel like adding diodes and such and I wasn't planning on using the oil temp idiot light any way.

Then wired the tach pick-up to the negative on the coil (the one the black and yellow wire goes to)

The tach cable from the 73-77 GT550 was the perfect length for the new speedo! (sorry I don't recall which post or who posted this info originally to give credit where it is due)  I got it off FleaBay for $16.99 new with $4.95 shipping, but I did see a few used ones for less.  Also picked up the Raptor petcock new for $24.50 including shipping.   I ran the new cable along the same path as the clutch cable and there was plenty of room to spare.

Raptor was a breeze to instal, I touched up the paint on the frame under the gas tank since one of the previous owners must have had it off a number of times and didn't care about the stock petcock scratching the hell out of the paint  >:(  The Raptor cleared the frame with ease and turns much smoother then my stock one did also  ;)

The Tach is slightly brighter then the Speddo, but it shows up with alot more contrast on the picture of them together no matter what angle I took a picture from LOL.  They are both a really nice blue, not too bright or neon like in person.  Yes the Tach works spot on!  I didn't have a chance to take a ride to check the speedo or the vibration factor tonight, my wife is still out of town and I'm home alone with the sleeping toddler  ;)

Next is to mock up a console with the voltmeter and possibly adding an oil temp gauge or a 12v accessory outlet along with a drink holder.  I picked up some SunPro 1 1/2" mini gauges and a piece of black 3" PVC straight plumbing coupling to make a drink holder out of, and I have some carbon fiber hanging arounf to make the actual console out of.  We'll see how that works out, it'll take a little bit of figuring I'm sure  :D

Scrapping the drink holder and I'm just going to make an insert for the voltmeter,  here's a pic of the preliminary mock-up.  I have the prototype made too, but it's drying and in pieces so pics to come on that  ;)

Well wifey finally returned from her business trip, so I was able to take a ride this morning and test out the Tach & Speedo   :D   Everything was 100% spot on!

@4000 RPM
20 MPH in 1st gear
30 MPH in 2nd gear
45 MPH in 3rd gear
55 MPH in 4th gear

@5000 RPM
25 MPH in 1st gear
40 MPH in 2nd gear
55 MPH in 3rd gear

so everything corresponds with what the owner's manual lists as proper speed for RPM's in each gear  ;)

SaVaGeEaRL  yes everything is stock on the bike

Awesome.. simply awesome!

So how was the vibration? Can the gauges be read good enough? I worry about them over severe bumps.

Congratz!

Title: Re: ToesNose tach & speedo
Post by ToesNose on 08/27/12 at 08:22:26

I only had her on country road, but up to 60MPH very minimum vibration. The Tach housing was lightly shaking with no effect on the needle. And the Speedo was completely unaffected

Well the first prototype for the tank gauge insert is almost finished. Just need to sand, prime & paint it   :D   Then if it's good enough cast a mold!

Did you need to remove any metal from the caps on the handlebars to keep the bars tight?

Title: Re: ToesNose tach & speedo
Post by BOBD on 08/30/12 at 06:50:44

I put 2 red led's on my mirrors and hooked them up to the turn signal wires in the head light. You have to cover the led's with a piece of a black hose big enough to fit over the led and just see the top of the led so you can see them in the daylight. Since I'm always looking in my mirrors they remind me to turn off turn signals. Also I am trying to make it a habit to turn them off right after turning.

Have you ridden a bike with a heel/toe shifter......and gotten in the habit?

My wife and I rented a Harley Ultra Classic and rode it around for a day when we were in Florida this year.  It had floorboards and a heel/toe shifter......and I tried the heel part a few times and it didn't seem to be any easier or more convenient to me.  I just kept doing stuff "my way"....and kept using my toe like I normally do.  It is hard to break a routine that you have been doing since 1968.

Title: Re: ToesNose tach & speedo

I had a heel/toe shifter on my 2009 Yamaha 650 and I liked it a lot. You get used to it. I have also put one on a Yamaha 250 I had. I doubt I will do it to the S40, I would have to fabricate it and have no way to weld it.

I'm not sure what caps you are refering to Greg  :-?
But I didn't have to do any modifications to the bike to mount them, I only had to cut the bottom of the gauge mounts themselves  ;)

I believe he was questioning if the handlebar clamps tighten down enough to still hold the bars tightly. I did the same when I mounted my tach that way, I had to grind off part of the mounting tab on the tach, but I did not do anything to the risers to compensate for that additional thickness. I now have mini-apes installed too, which put more stress on those risers, but I still haven't had mine slip yet (knock on wood).

OK finally finished the prototype and I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out (other then a huge bug dive bombed it while my second coat of paint dried LOL)  Now I'm just waiting on the blue LED lights & resistors to be delivered.  The SunPro voltmeter I used on this one is a Super Mini 1 1/2", I'm also going to be making one for the more common 2 1/16" gauge size. Then I'll be casting molds of them and see how much time and how much it costs in materials to make them.  If anyone is interest just let me know, after I cast the molds and make one I'll be able to come up with a price for them.  I'm also going to make one for the keyswitch to be moved up top.  I already have someone working on patents for the first prototype, and hopefully next week I'll start working on the 2 1/16" mock-up   :D

Oh also update on the Dime City Speedo & Tach, I finally got a good ride in this morning and got on the interstate. Up into the 70's Mph with almost no vibration and no jumping needles  ;)   I've been talking with the guys at Dime City and they still recomend using rubber gaskets to dampen vibration and to help prolong the light bulbs life, so I'll probably do that soon  ;)

Buy the The Garmin & watch the $$$$ Zumo outta yo wallet at 220 MPH!

I like it,, but, the other approach, ( Mo Wurk) versus Mo Money
would be how I would have to go.,

Virtual "gas Gauge"? Would my immediate proximity to it make it always read full, since I am?

Hey BOBD I've never tried to repair a Tach, but you can open up any  gauge that has a pressed on front face you just need to take your time. I've cracked open a speedo with a stuck trip odometer and fixed it. There are vids up on YouTube explaining how to get it open and how to seal it back up, there might even be one that'll show you how to fix the Tach   ;)

Title: Re: ToesNose tach & speedo

Wish I would have known that a while back. I just replaced it. I don't see anything about opening one up. Maybe you can tell me where to find it. I sold that bike.

BOBD, unless you have a history of performing autopsies on things that die, not seeing it & doing it is perfectly understandable. People like me take things apart, sometimes I bust them to pieces, sometimes I fix them,,
I know Im gonna walk off into my tach & hope I can find it & fix it. I saw it flutter , off & On, over the past few months, so, Im hoping its just a bad connection, busted wire, cracked board,, & not a problem inside the movement,, cuz Im no neurosurgeon.
Its not likely theres a post anywhere online thats gonna tell ya how to open it up or how to fix it.,It comes down to your personal level of McGyverism & bravery. Thankfully, working on something thats busted & that no one else is gonna fix for ya means you cant cost yourself a dime by trying.,

Securing the face? Doesnt sound like a tough problem, really,, but something thats built to be on a bike, is beuilt to survive the rain, & isnt likely to be easy to open. Odds of getting in w/o leaving some marks are pretty slim, IMO. YOu mite compromise the seal, so, may hafta ugly it up a bit so it will hold epoxy to seal it up..
If you still have it & dont want it, lemmee know..

Post by BOBD on 09/03/12 at 13:08:38

Sorry don't have it. I did try to fix and I did bust it up. Got pissed and smashed the sucker. If I decide to put one on the S40 and it does the same I will do better next time. I had mine on the handlebars without any rubber damper so that may have been a problem. I would find a way to mount it with some rubber mount of some kind. I'm there is something out there. Like this: http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-handlebar-parts-tach-tachometer-speedo-speedometer-molunting-p-clamp-dcc-pclamp-1.html  Think I can find this at the hardware store.

I've been wanting to do something with the old turn siganal and high beam warning lights since I moved the idiot lights up onto the speedo, but just haven't had the time even though I had all the parts I needed.  Late Sept. I ordered some blue LEDs, resistors and blue plexiglass and I finally had some time to work on it.  It should look nice with all blue on the speedo, tach & voltmeter (I wish the speedo light was easy to swap, it's too bright compaired to the others)  The pic is just using a 9V to mock it up, I need to trim the rubber gasket a bit and then solder all the resistors and conections up.

I find white faced gauges very easy to read day and night, I probably would have gone with teal led lights like on 67/68 mustang gauges if they were easy to swap on the speedo and tach.

keep up the great work. this is giving me ideas on what i want to do with my bike as soon as i finish the oil leak. tearing the motor apart this weekend. would you be interested in making another gauge mount for the gas tank? im not wanting to use a volt meter. i just know im not good with making stuff like that..

in all honesty i want to find a way. ( and i know there is a way) to put a fuel gauge  in that spot. this is my first bike and no gas gauge makes no sence to me.

Title: Re: ToesNose tach & speedo
Post by ToesNose on 01/13/13 at 13:10:55

Ahh that is a huge debate and topic of discussion off and on. There are a bunch of threads you can find, some not so long ago, that touch on all the pros and cons of having and installing a fuel gauge. Basically they almost always come down to the fact that the LS650 is an economy bike and that most people ride it because it is inexpensive to purchase, maintain and ride. The cost of adding a fully functioning fuel gauge basicly doesn't make sense. It's very simple to learn what type of mileage you get and then just keep an eye on miles riden to know that you'll have to gas up soon. Also compared to a car you have a reserve to switch to if you aren't paying attention LOL.  One of the reason's I went with the speedo I have is to have a resetable trip meter, just to know where I'm at with gas  ;)

Title: Re: ToesNose tach & speedo
Post by mikey2004 on 01/13/13 at 17:35:37

you know what your right. i'd have to go with a volt meter. i saw that you had a reset able tach. thats what i like the most. be nice to have one. hope you dont mind if i steal the idea. lol. just gotta get that hole filled and find a way to mount them to the stock bars. i dont plan on changing them.

Well I've had some spare time and the weather is getting nice off and on, so I started working on the 2 1/16" gauge insert.  Instead of making a backer and building it up with bondo like the last one I went ahead and just started with a block of wood, so far it's coming along quicker I just need to chissle it down more then start sanding  :)

Not only is the larger gauge more readily available, I think it looks better since it's a large opening to fill.  ;)
