Title: Thinking of buying the 2012 Boulevard S40
Post by kalm333888 on 08/21/12 at 13:52:02

I dont have any experience with the bike, but i am interested in getting one. Are there any noticeable issues with the 2012 model ? and is the backfiring really that bad ? Cause i know in canada if you have any exhaust that isn't stock, they can fine you for it.... the whole rejetting process i have no clue how to do if i ever get the bike and whether it would be possible through a dealer here.....

What province are you in? I've only every heard of people being fined for running straight pipes around here.

Same in NS. No law about stock.

My 2011 is stock right now and the backfiring is non-existent unless I downshift aggressively.

Go to www.motorcycle.com click on reviews and check out Suzuki Comprisons Three for Five, Budget Bombers. This was written in 2007 but the only thing that seems to have changed on the bike is the colours. There are also individual reviews of the S40 on this site. Most of them favourable considering the type of bike that it is. Some people on this site may consider you get a better deal second hand and will argue cogently for this option. However, you will at least get a factory warranty buying new and won't have to worry about other peoples mods and tinkerings. I brought mine new in 2010 and have no regrets. I thoroughly enjoy it so far and think this site is wonderful. If I hadn't brought a tach off EBAY today I'd think about donating.

Ive been wrenching on stuff since I was a kid. I was the mechanic for an oilfield company, by The Mechanic, I mean I was the guy who did all the repairs & drove trucks & operated equipment in the field. I bought a new one, so I would have that warranty. I wished later I had known how easy it would be to keep it going. I coulda saved at least $2,000.00. If I had found this place before I found the bike, I woulda got a used one. All the car & truck wrenching I had done didnt comfort me when I was thinking about working on a bike. Its so danged Easy,, I wish I woulda bought used,,

I bought a 2006 S40 with 1850 miles on it about 6 months ago for $2800.  I am new to cycling and wanted a bike that was lightweight and handled easily but had enough power to cruise at 60 mph.  Minor backfiring but I easily manage it by minimizing the engine braking and using the suggestions in this forum.  Otherwise, this machine has been trouble-free.  Overall, a great buy!  I would highly recommend the S40; particularly to someone new to cycling. :)

When mine get a new owner, That owner will be buying a bike thats been looked after & had the bugs worked out..I disagree with the "Always buy new" & I am in real good company. I know a millionaire who NEVER buys a new vehicle. Ill never buy another new anything with wheels.

If you want the dealer to do all the work on it, maybe better to buy new but if you enjoy doing some stuff yourself, I'm with Justin_O. There's a bunch of lightly used S40s out there and some of them have had an easy life. Not everyone is out to screw you. I always tell a buyer everything I know about a bike, I'd rather lose money than have someone think I shafted them.

Thank you all for the replies... i mean i know its easy getting a used bike... its just the satisfaction of having a brand new vehicle and knowing if something is wrong with the bike coming the factory, that you can take it back within a year to get it repaired properly through dealer. But ya anyways ... looks like the 2012 doesn't really have a huge backfiring issue based on what i am reading so gonna go for it, but only after they make a promotion or the 2013 comes out if there are none left in stock. Cause they only usually make a small quantity as not many people buy them, just mainly the schools training students.

Even if it did backfire a bit, it's very easily adjusted.  If you do get it, welcome to the club.  Either way, welcome to the site!

Until you decide whether or not a motorcycle is in your life long term, it's far better to buy a low mileage used S40 than pay full retail plus all the add-on charges the stealership enjoys including with new purchases.
Case in point, I paid $2,000 for my 2006 S40 with 810 miles on the ODO.  The previous owner decided they wanted/needed a Harley and the Harley stealership didn't want to accept the S40 on trade.  Check craigslist and ebay, with summer coming to a close, you just might find a screaming deal.
Until you decide riding a motorcycle is something you enjoy, it's far easier to recover most of a $2,000 expenditure than losing your arse on a $5,000+ purchase.

Yes to buy new, thats what I thought.
I came here to check out the bike, was a little wary of buying one but the guys here put my mind at ease. So back to the showroom I go. I tell em I am really interested and just have to go home to get insurance and stuff ready. The bike here inCanada, Nova Scotia would have cost me with taxes $7200, with finance the cost would have been $8600 over 5 years or so.
On the way home parked on a store front with a for sale sign was this 2003 savage with 4200 km. It had all Willy and whats his name leather side and rear bags, rear rack, side rails,  suzuki windshield, and a tach fitted. Whats the cost of that stuff to buy ? $600 I will bet. Has no blueing at all on pipes, dont back fire. A phut on turn off thats all,Good tires, and really perfect condition.
This cost me with taxes $3000 to ride on the road. Am I happy, you bet, and I know its not new but I sure changed my mind.
Just saying in a long winded way to check out used bikes.  ;D

I should add, a warranty is one year and in canada that means 5 months unless your putting snow shoes on her.

I'm with you Justin! Besides I've heard a good deal of horror stories about dealers messing with folks who tried to bring their bikes back in for warranty work.
Kalm, the only exception IMHO would be if you really, really don't want to have to work on the bike or do any of your own maintainence. (but then again, think of all the fun you'll miss spinning wrenches) :'(

the dealer was trying to sell me a used 2011 s40 for like 5600 with 11000 km on it :P thats y im probably opting for the new, plus i could not find one used s40 on craigslist, kijiji, ebay or any other site within my area. They are pretty rare here. :P

Title: Re: Thinking of buying the 2012 Boulevard S40
Post by J C Stokes on 08/23/12 at 01:36:27

It's an interesting comparison. What's the difference between $5600 Canadian and the new price? How much warranty is left on the 2011?. How much riding time do you have left before your winter sets in? How much mechanical experience have you had? Some of those who have posted on this thread are experienced mechanics with plenty of tools. Are you really interested in DIY maintenance, or do you just want to ride? Thionk these things over before deciding. You might be able to screw him down a little on the 2011.

Holy smoke!  :o Got to admit, that is cheap money for a brand new left over. Nice paint too. Too bad it doesn't have the backrest. It would be hard to turn that down if I were in the market for a newer Savage.

I was able to buy a new 2011 s40 for only $4500. I bought new because I am not much of a mechanic and I liked the idea of a warranty. Plus I am new to cycleing and didnt know enough about motorcycles to pick out a good used one. After saying all of that if I had a chance to go back and find a good used one I proboly would have still bought a new one. Suzuki gave me 100% financing with 2 lemits and a vest and at 0% interest so I couldnt pass that up. By the way I havent had much problems with backfiring either. I am tall (6'2") I eventually I will invest in some forward controls but for the most part i have bee really happy with the bike. Its not the best bike for riding 2 up but by yourselfe its great. I have been averaging between 50 and 55 mpg's so its very affordable to ride. Good luck

Ya im going to go ahead and purchase a new vehicle, problem is its priced at around 6200 + taxes which comes up to like ... 7200/7300 ..... i know a little pricey here .. so waiting for the price to be lowered and the stock is very low for the new 2012 here in canada.. worst case scenario i get the 2013 model at the same price next year :)

Well its cause i was hoping to get the other two-tone selection they have (orange and black), not too into the silver/white two tone version .. looks a little plain for me .. but also just the hassle of having to deal with someone long distance, let's say if something was wrong with the bike and what not, id much rather be dealing with someone locally, that way i can insure that the transaction goes over smoothly, plus shipping i think would be quite a bit for a vehicle that size.

warranty is only a year or 6 months Canadian time due to snow.
Would not any dealer honour a suzuki warranty?

I have had a Yamaha 250, 2 Yamaha 650's and a Suzuki TU250. I now have a 2012 Suzuki S40 and think it is the best bike I have owned so far. I am going to leave this one stock except for the K&N air filter. Got tired of the loud pipes I had on the Yamaha's. I like the S40 because it is almost as light as a 250, but has more get up and go. One of my 650's was converted to a Voyager trike and didn't like it, the other was a Cass County of Missouri trike conversion. Didn't like it, no rear suspension. So went back to 2 wheels with S40. At 68 years old it works for me. Have added engine guards and highway pegs. Am working on trying to figure out how to get floorboards on it. By the way this bike will do 100MPH at least that's what the speedo said, but I believe it was more around 95-97MPH. Most motorcycle speedos are always wrong.

If you are keen to get one, make a discrete call to the Amhurst/Halifax guy and see if he has black and orange ones. His ad mentions stock, so he may have more than one bike. Then see your local guy and see if some sort of deal can't be worked out between the three of you. I agree with Zippy in that the local guy should honour Suzuki servicing and warranty. I looked at a site last night which showed black and orange as a 2011 colour. Finally beware of people in foreign countries trying to persuade you to buy motor bikes.

My 2012 Suzuki S40 is black and orange. I preferred it over the blue and white one.

Most motorcycle speedos are always wrong.

was looking at the same bikes and really fell for the s40 :)

Finally beware of people in foreign countries trying to persuade you to buy motor bikes.

hmm ill see if that works thanks for the advice :)
