Title: Strange Sound
Post by Ryan on 08/20/12 at 18:52:28

I'm a brand new rider with a brand new 2012 S40 and limited mechanical skills.  I keep hearing this metallic tinkling/jingling sound coming from the left side when I hit about 30 mph, again at 40 mph and again at 50 mph.  Is this normal?  I took it to a local shop and they told me not to worry about it but it just sounds so odd to me.  At first I thought it was my keys hitting the shock but I took all of them off and still hear it.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

many things will jingle, usual culprits are the headlight and speedo.
put your hand on it when you hear the noise and see if it goes away.
not that?  then try something else... keep your hand outta anything moving.   ;D

Strange that it pops up at 10 mile per hour increments, speedo would be my first guess  :o

Since its at those speeds, different gears, Im gonna say RPM related, maybe someone missed a rubber under a head cover. Get on a smooth road & lay a hand on the chrome decoration on the head & see if that damps the racket, I wear gloves, if you dont,, dont scorch yer grippers,,

Try this -
Wrap your kickstand spring with a small piece of rag & go for a ride.
(I think I have the same rattle)

Another thing it could be as mine does this is, The steel coil loom that covers the front brake line and throttle cable.  Mine sing at certain RPM's. Took me awhile to figure out what it was until I grabbed one of them and compressed it down like a spring and the sound diminished on each one I did that to.

Left side?... Check the belt guard, too. Especially right where it fits under the pulley cover. 8-)
