Title: 12 volt auxiliary power supply question
Post by tizzyfit on 08/16/12 at 08:50:15

Currently, I've wired the 12 volt pigtail for the trickle charger directly to the (+/-) battery terminals.  Recently, I purchased a Garmin GPS which has approximately 5 hrs. of battery life.  My question is, can I use the same 12v pigtail to power the GPS or do I need to add something additional in order to charge the GPS battery?

You can use this pigtail.  It should have an inline fuse installed, and the pigtail will not be controlled by the ignition switch  - so you have to remember to unplug it or shut off the device when you park the bike.

Something like this should work...

THANKS Dave!  I thought it would work BUT I've been wrong about 12v issues in the past and didn't want to fry any portion of the electrical system.

THANKS EJID!  That's exactly what I need!  Between the Garmin charger cable and this cigarette plug-in, I'm going to have about 8 feet of excess wire to deal with.

tizzy,
I don't know which Garmin you have but mine came with a USB connector so you can hook it up to a pc for updates. The USB connector also works as a charger. I have a 2 port USB adapter that plugs into the cigarette lighter socket. I go from there to the Garmin with the USB cable which seems about 2 feet long.

For what it is worth

I know it's not as cheap as what was suggested so far, I use the micro usb version of this for my cell phone.
