Title: I want a tachometer
Post by grungeant on 08/12/12 at 11:28:17

I want a tach, and I would also like a speedo with a trip counter.
I like the Ryca gauges, but I don't think they would be easy to see on a stock bike. I have the stock drag bars.
Does anyone know how they mount and can the angle or postion of them be changed?

Can someone recommend a handlebar mounted tach or tach and speedo set up that would work and look nice on a stock bike?

I would prefer to have gauges mounted in a more standard position mounted in front of the center of the handlbars and angled towards my face instead of on the tank.
I could probably live with the stock speedometer, but I definately would like a tachometer.

My advice is forget about the tach. It is just clutter for your bars. Rev it up and go!

As for the odo, there are lots of clever suggestions in other threads on the site, including using a three digit combo lock to track when you need to refuel.

I put a bicycle computer on the handlebars for a speedometer that I can see without looking between my legs.  Bonus features are trip meter and clock.  It's not a cool as a nice set of nice real gauges (like the ones Ryca uses) would be, but it works great and I don't run out of gas anymore (just fill up when the trip meter hits about 100 miles).  I think the tech section has a thread on this -- only certain bike computers will work, because some top out at 50 mph but some go up to 200mph.  I used a Sigma.  Total cost to me was less than $30.

Look at the Trail Tech or Vapor Tech.  They have really nice computers that can include a tach, odo, temperature, clock and MPH.  They will require several wire hook ups to get them working - but you can even include your high beam and turn signal indicators on the one with a dash board.

The Vapor thing is kind of neat, but I don't want a hightech digital computer looking thing.
I definately want analog looking gauges.

There are analogue ones at JP Cycles, visit their website and type in tachometer. If you want to spend money one of the fancy Baron Bullet ones will fit. There is a thread on this site called tachometers known to work on the Savage or something similar and this lists the Baron Bullet in question. The JP ones are similar to Ryca and seem to retail at about $US79

The analogue tach post is in page 7 of the tech documents section

grungeant I just got a tach as well as a speedo with odo and all the idiot lights from Dime City Cycles.  I have a stock S40 and mounting them up at the bar mounts , so far mocking them up they are very visable.  I was waiting till I got my raptor petcock this week to pull the tank and do everything at once. I read all the posts I could find about Tachs for the LS650 talked to a few mechanics and emailed the guys at Dime City back and forth, it seems that the tach should work from piecing all the info together.  I'll start a new thread with pics and all that good stuff (like if the Tach works LOL) once I start working on it hopefully next weekend.

how do the gauges attatch?
does the single eyelet attatch to one of the handlebar clamp bolts? Then the gauge bolts to the double eyelet side?

I am guessing the Ryca gauges are probably universal so would probably fit on different mounting brackets than just the ones on the Ryca page.

If you are using the dime city gauges what are you going to do with the big hole in the middle of the tank?
I only saw the Ryca elimator plate that has the key switch  in it which I think would be cooler than being under the seat.
Also the Ryca plate has idiot lights in it, so I don't think I would want a gauge that had them if I was using the Ryca plate.
I also like the way the Ryca gauges have the trip counter reset on the right side so the tach can be mounted on the left.

Bad links! Bad Bad links!! Thanks for the heads up and the link fix CalisOsin  ;)

Yea grungeant I'm mounting one on each of the front handlebar clamp bolts, then the gauges mount to them from the two small bolts on the back. The only thing I had to do was flatten the bottom rounded area below the single eyelet with my dremel to make it fit.  I'm planning on making a new center console out of carbon fiber I had laying around which will have a drink holder in the speedo center and will come up higher in the back with one of two things either a voltmeter and oil temp gauges or volt meter  and cigarette lighter socket.   I'll decide after I get everything torn apart and get a chance to mock up a console in styrofoam  :D     And I love the fact that the idiot lights are on the speedo where they are in plain view instead of on the tank (Yay my Raptor showed up today too!)

My little boy is sick with a stomach bug today   :'(  I'll get a pic up of the gauges mounted tonight for ya to check out.

Looks like it worked  :D

Looks good as a matched pair mounted like that in my opinion. I have a similar tach mounted the same way, but on the left like your speedo.

I'm curious about how that speedo will work for you. According to the DC website, it is the 60:2240 ratio which is the same ratio that the RYCA boys are using with their 18" rear tire. I wonder how far off the speedo will be from actual with the stock size tire  :-?

The Dime City Tach looks very similar to what J P Cycles sell. Once you have it up and running I would be interested in Knowing if there are any issues with the instrument vibrating while you ride.

Here's my cheap eBay tach... I took out those pull-back risers and mounted my new bars right next to the triple tree. I had to bend the mounting bracket on the tack back towards me a little, but I like how it looks and works for me. I've put on about 1,300 miles since I installed it, and no problems so far.

And J.C. - yes the tach vibrates and I haven't had any problems with mine, another member - Ralphguy (I think) said he had the same one and it vibrates to the point of blowing the lightbulb inside. Mine is LED backlit, so I don't think I will have that problem.

I dropped the dime on the Baron Bullet tach. The interior light burned out within 2 weeks and the suggested replacement would not fit in the bulb holder until I trimmed it a bit. With the black face the needle is not visible at night.
BTW I use the tach to keep the speed steady- it's more accurate than the speedo.

So are the tabs sandwiched between the handlebar clamps?
Are the attatching bolts on the gauges fixed?
Can you rotate the mounting brackets so the gauges are closer together or will the faces on them be crooked?

Is that something that can be adjusted by changing a gear or something?

Title: Re: I want a tachometer

Yea the mounts are sandwiched between the handlebar clamps.

Yupper the attaching bolts on the gauges are fixed, so rotating will tilt the faces.  The only way to tilt them in towards each other would be to make new mounting brackets with the gauge mounting holes positioned differently, not really difficult to do.  :D

As for the speedo, nope they can't be adjusted    :P

hmm... I wonder if you could take the dash of another bike with simaler mounting points, like say maybe a Harley Sportster and use gauges from a different bike that has a simaler tire size and put them in the dash panel?

It'd be pretty neat if parts from a Suzuki actually worked for this then the trim or gauges would actually say Suzuki.

like maybe get a mount like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorcycle-Harley-Chopper-Bobber-Speedo-Tach-Mount-/320934755844?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ab933be04&vxp=mtr
with some gauges from a different bike so the speedo will be accurate.
I have a question though... If the speedo drive is on the front wheel wouldn't the speedo still be accurate if you only changed the rear tire size?
Or does the Ryca cafe racer also use a different front tire too?

The stock speedo is not attached to the front wheel at all, it is connected to the transmission, so any changes in gearing (with change to chain or changing front sproket) or rear tire size will effect the speedo indicated final drive speed.

Got ya. I've only had my bike a few weeks.
On my last bike the speedo drive was at the bottom of the front fork.

Yea the most accurate aftermarket speedos (spaz moment watching a sick little boy didn't mean tach) are digital ones with a pickup on the front wheel, but I just love the looks of anolog   ;)

There are speedos  that are analog but also have the digital pickup from the front wheel, but the ones that I found were $102 without a mount   :-?

I basically paid a few dollars more then that for a Speedo with all idiot lights, Tach and mounts   :D

Title: Re: I want a tachometer
Post by grungeant on 08/14/12 at 10:54:31

My last bike was a 1983 KZ750 twin. The Speedo was off the front wheel, and the tach was gear driven right from the cam. It had a cable that went right into the valve cover. There wasn't anything digital about it.

That makes two of us. I sent Ryca an email asking them how accurate their speedo would be on a stock bike, and they replied with
"Our speedo is accurate, same ratio as stock and 90% of other jap bikes  2240/60 ratio."

I guess it's close enough? I found most stock speedometers on cars read about 1-2mph faster than what you are actually going at highway speed, and I found when I went from 33's to 35's on my pickup with out changing speedo gears the speedo got more accurate, but never was more than about 1.5mph.
So I guess the ratio that it would be off must be very minimal in the highway and under speeds that it doesn't really matter?

Yes I had two of them mounted the same way as yours and it kept blowing bulbs every two weeks from vibrations and the first one eventually died completely. The second one I eventually mounted with the included vibra-clamp and haven't had an issue since. I have it mounted now just to the left of the handlebar clamp.
The funny thing is that with that vibra-clamp it actually shakes more at certain rpm's than before, but that seems to not hurt it any.
I do believe that is the higher frequency vibrations when mounted rigid what killed it and the bulbs. I have a similar issue with my stem nut clock.
If I run it over 80mph for more than a few minutes at a time, the clock stops running. Tried three different ones and all did the same.

Have you ever used the Marlin clock with the talon mount? I just put one on the left side next to my clutch perch.
It's basically a wrist watch mounted in a round stainless frame with a silicone grommet in between.

No, haven't, but the reason I got a stem nut clock was theclean integrated look. But the rigid way it mounts is what kils it. I may just try to fill the housing it mounted ts with full of silicone and not use the set screw to fasten it. That may help cushioning it from vibrations.

Wife is away for business this coming week, so I'll be able to get some work done on the bike at night. Should get it all done this week and then check the acuracy of the gauges next weekend.  I promise once I get anything accomplished I'll start a thread, most likely tomorow night.   :)

That's cool man. I really dig your volt meter mount.
I thought if I ever got a tach and speedo I would want them together, so I would probably buy the plate from Ryca with the key switch.
This is the first bike I ever had where the key wasn't up top, and at first it kind of bugged me and made me nervous, but now I've gotten used to using the kill switch and kind of like the key being under the seat now, so I wouldn't like the Ryca plate anymore.

I don't like the way your gauges are so far apart though, and I don't really like the way they mount from the bottom.
I didn't know you were so good at fabricating stuff.
Perhaps you can make some sort of single piece that would mount both gauges from the faces so they would be closer to the top of the riser clamp level, and make them about 1/4" apart?

For now I bought the EMGO Dunstall reverse cone muffler. I will get it put on in the next day or so. I think most of my problem is I never had a bike without a tach, and I never had a bike I couldn't hear and it makes me nervous because I can't really hear my engine over the wind above 45mph, and at 55mph even turning my head sideways I can't really tell the difference between 4th gear and 5th gear untill an incline. The only reason I know I'm in 5th gear is when I grab the clutch and the shifter won't go up anymore.
I was even able to hear my quiet KLR250 through the wind at 85mph.
I rode my girlfriend's 250 Rebel 70mph the other day and I could hear the engine fine and was less nervous. Although I would like a tach, I have yet to see one with a mount that I would like to have on mine, so hopefully a louder muffler will make things more comfortable riding to work.

I thought about taking a tach/speedo set from a different bike, but I have yet to see one that is as clean as my bike for a reasonable price.

Join the try to change up to sixth brigade Grungeant, there are times when it feels like it has or wants a sixth cog. There is a small difference between fourth and fith ratios, some on this forum argue that it should have stayed four speed, I don't agree. My tach has arrived from EBAY and I will opt for the ralfyguy mounting although I would have preffered a white face like toesnose, but mine is brought and paid for. The dealership will install it. Ralfyguys picture of his tach mounting is in the post on Rotella oil abuse.

Yup, seen his tach. I prefer the white face gauges too, especially with the blue lights, but I already bought a Marlin clock with the black face to match the OEM speedo.

Something like this would be cool, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Instrument-Frame-for-1972-1973-Suzuki-GT750-Clocks-Gauges-Instruments-/200813316323?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ec16808e3&vxp=mtr and put my own gauges in it. Maybe it would be cool with a temp gauge?
If I had something like this, I would want something like ToseNose's volt meter, but I would like it better with a compass instead.

I wonder if this tach would work?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Suzuki-Volusia-VL800-OEM-Tachometer-/170902617931?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27ca96ff4b&vxp=mtr

My KLR250 had a 6speed. I don't understand why more bikes don't have 6 gears especially small underpowered bikes. I think my girlfriend's Rebel would be way more economical, and pretty sweet if it had another gear... and if you can handle riding a bike that physically small.

I'm not sure about the spacing on the riser bolts (maybe you could contact the seller to verify) but in the pic, when you zoom in you can see the text "YIH TYAN" printed on the face of the tach. That brand name is printed on many other tachs that do work with our ignition including the one mounted on my bike.

So, my guess is that the tach would work with our bike, but not 100% sure about the mounting bracket. Would look good if it does though.  8-)

If anyone is interested in that tach feel free to buy it. I'm not going to buy a tach at this time.

I am going to look up what a Suzuki Volusia is and see what it looks like on the actual bike, and if I do decide I want one like this int he future at least I know it's an OEM part so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

I found these pics on a different Suzuki message board
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj166/badandy158/Project2.png

http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj166/badandy158/Project1.png

Apparently they made this tach as either an OEM part, or perhaps it was optional, however it is currently discontinued. and they have been saying C50 so I guess that's another name for the the Volusia?
nobody mentioned exactly what year bikes it was used on, but the one guy did say he bought his from ebay. So being they are both for Suzukis I would imagine the riser bolt spacing are probably the same?

and maybe a outside air temp gauge on the stem.
