Title: I hate my bike
Post by Paraquat on 08/08/12 at 17:55:10

Just got it back together. Rode it around. Been playing with dialing in the pilot jet (on the stock carb) while riding it to work for the past three days now.
Me and the girl figured we'd go for a short ride after work today. On the way home the bike started to feel fluttery like it does before it runs out of gas. Since I'm trying to log my mileage I wanted to see how long I could push it.
We're cruising down the highway in the middle lane doing about 70. The bike cuts out, as it's done hundred's of times before having to switch to reserve, so I flip to reserve, fire it back up and head to the nearest gas station. I got 55 miles on a full tank.
Fire it up and I see some smoke. Get it home, pull in the driveway and it's a fog machine of blue (oil) smoke.

Leakdown test says both sets of valves leaking. Awesome.

When was the last time they were adjusted?
How many miles on the bike?

I adjusted it when I put it back together. Only ~100 miles since I slapped it back together.

See how tite they are.

Did you have any valve work done on it?

While apart I had the seats cut so the valves should be recessed by a hair more than stock. I lapped them after they were cut to ensure a good seal.
I have Saturday off so I'll be getting into it then.

Hrm.
When I did the leak down there was no blow by coming out of the crankcase through the oil fill hole.
The valves were tighter than I had last left them. .001-.002" area.
Readjusted to .006 just to keep it loose. Still blowing smoke. Took the exhaust off and my runners are soaked in oil. Wiped it down, fired it up, watched it, shut it down. Oil is on the ceiling of the runners which means it's being ejected from the cylinder.
Broke it all down and I'm going to assume I washed down the rings with too much fuel. Cylinder is borked and piston is a paper weight.
If that's not fully the case then I believe I had insufficient oil pressure while I was trying to dial in that VM36 with the short little starts and stops which contributed to wear which led to this wash down related failure.
Either way this cylinder isn't going to hone out with .020".

Edit: Or detonation. It's only on the skirt though and not on the face. Lands don't look cooked. A local shop has my jug now. They are going to bore it as much as they have to for it to clean, tell me what size piston I'd need, then I'll hand them my .020 over or buy another piston, hone to suit, and slap it together.
