Title: Riding as pain therapy.
Post by gerald.hughes on 08/03/12 at 17:22:25

George, Serowbot, and I rode up the Lemon this morning.  Physically, I was having a pretty rough day.  But I noticed that as I rode, things got a little better, maybe even more than a little better.  That got me thinking.  As someone who lives with, among other things, spinal arthritis, I often go riding when I am in pain.

I was wondering if there are any others on the site who ride as a sort of pain therapy?

I do. Four days after a discectomy I was riding Lisa's Intruder around our old condo parking lot. I can't go very far in a car anymore (driver or passenger) but can ride most of the day on a properly fitting bike. Knocks some of the knots out, gets things realigned.

I don't know what it is- the seating position, or the constant vibration, but my back and hips can be killing me and I get on the bike and 15 min later I am nearly, or sometimes completely, pain free. I have arthritis in my lower back , hips, one elbow, and three fingers.

I haven't found it helps me yet,  but then again my Corbin seat hasn't broken in yet either.  I also haven't been riding as much lately because it's just been way to hot, to work on the bike to figure out the weird issue of the gremlins in my starter circuit.

Riding works mostly as a psychological/soul therapy,
...tell me, have you ever seen motorcycles parked
outside a quack's office?  not likely.

For joints and pain nothing works better that swimming  ;)

(Oh yeah, and dump the refined flours and sugars!)

For me it's mostly mental therapy.   I used to meditate daily and riding gives me that same feeling because I can let my mind go (luckily, it comes back - LOL)

My physical problems are most arthritic and tendonitis, and altho the disease can manifest itself anywhere, it often is in my hands and wrists.   In fact, I haven't ridden for the past month because my right hand can't close.   It has been coming more often and worse in the past few years, so if it gets too bad I'll have to quit riding altogether.

I find riding to be fully physical and psychological, generally improving all aspects.
I think about all sorts of stuff and pray often.  It's a good time for that sort of thing. 8-)
And yes, it's pretty good for body aches/pains.

Lately, my biggest "pain" has been the GF.........She hates motorcycles, so, when I ride, my pain is complete displaced, at least for a few hours. ;D ;D

Mmmmm...the GF hates motorcycles ? ?

Not the desired situation, me thinks.

So many females to choose from ... so few perfect bikes.

Mine is terrified of them but we compromised on ATTGATT.  It's not always comfortable in the summer but the rest of the time I'm fine with it.

I have to agree w/ Lancer. Thats the thing I miss most about riding. Nothing else gives me that feeling of closeness, riding down a country road, the smells of nature, the feeling of freedom,
Doesnt matter how many windows I have down on the truck, the field of view from inside a FF helmet is better & I can feel connected to the world & smell it & just BE & its good.

UPDATE......GF read this thread.......The spare bedroom now has a permanent resident, well, actually 3 permanent residents.......ME and the two dogs.  Intimacy has been reduced to "hallway sex" for those who have heard that joke, you'll understand.  For the rest of you, it's the equivalent of receiving the middle finger, when you pass each other in the hall. ;D

HAHA been married 25 years.... i dont even get that and she isn't particularly angry about anything....

I think my wife LIKES me ridding a motorbike... she fully expects me to crash and then she can cash in.  I ride very conservative ... just to piss her off.

OH yeah OP:

believe it or not... riding makes my tension headaches go away.  Not much for my back though. and my butt hates me....

I find nothing helps me relieve stress, tension as well
as just being pissed off, as much as a good ride on my
bike...
I have needed it this week and it sure has helped..
Their is a great route I ride to work that allows me
to have my "need for speed" time.. :) kim
