I can't seem to force Ryca's big fork spacer down in the tube and cap it without it flying out at deadly speed. Most of the time I can't even get it down far enough for the cap to start threading. Is there a trick?

You have it jacked up don't you,With your left hand push down on the cap with the handle of a hammer and turn the cap with your right hand.

ive done this 4-5 times in the last 2 months and have become pretty good at it....here are my tips
-wear gloves, lets you push down on the nut without hurting your hand as much.

-take the spacer out and find out where the nut threads catch the fork threads...this will help you align the nut quicker and with a minimal rotation, the threads will catch.

I haven't done the Ryca one, but the ones I replaced in my forks I used a box end wrench so I could push down on the wrench part and start turning.

You should be able to find the start threads visually, but, as noted above, you NEED to know where they are, so you dont spend all that energy spinning it a turn for nothing,Put a mark ( whiteout wipes off) where the start thread is in the tube & on the cap,. back up a hair & go,l.

Don't get the "handle of a hammer." Do you lay the handle across the top of the cap? Does this give you leverage or just acts as a cushion?

No put the hammer handle vertical. You get a good grip on the hammer head and claw to push down.

Better,.. use a ratchet with a 4" extension and a socket...
Mash down with your right hand pressing on the socket end of the ratchet, and grip the 4" extension and socket with your left hand and turn...
That's what I did when I added spacers... ;)...

PS... you might duct tape the nut to the socket,... to reduce the chance of shooting yourself...
PSS... Wear yer' helmet... :-?...

Similar to others I used a socket wrench. I had the bike somewhat braced so I could push down on it pretty hard. It was definitely a pain, but I pushed with one hand on the end of the socket wrench and turned it with the other.

If you can support your bike off of the ground then that will help so you dont have to fight the pressure your putting on the forks and extra compression. (I figured you were probably already doing this though)

When I was 16 I was buggin a guy for a job, in his back yard, while he was messin with the forks on his dirtbike, While I was there, he took one of the caps off his forks,, as we continued to talk, he started loosening the other one,, when it came out, the front of the bike went down, fast, as oil came out the top, maybe a little faster,,& I left,,pretty quick, cuz I really didnt want him to see me laffin my BUTT OFFF,,

I have had to make a L shaped handlebar fitting that lets you push down on the top using leverage ... L shaped bar - clamp it in the handle bar posts loose, then push down with the extra length of the L bearing down on the cap with a wrench on the cap, as you get it in start turning it as it gets in there and make sure you dont cross thread it.

I have fought this battle on other bikes....

I like using a palm ratchet and a short extension for this job:

The Progressive spring upgrade makes this real easy. The spacers are just below the top of the tube. The caps screw in with very little pressure.
