Title: Drop Box link to mileage spreadsheet -- works?
Post by Oldfeller on 07/29/12 at 08:42:44

Question is:    Using your OS and your browser and your favorite spreadsheet -- does this sucker actually work?

As always, when you go exploring new territory they can count the arrows in your back as to if it works good or not ....

Google Docs and Google Drive stuff doesn't work with Linux, so this here Drop Box stuff claims to work with everybody's everything (so here is the Indian arrow test) ....

As you look at the sheet, realize I locked the columns with the calculation formulas in them -- go try to add a name or some mileage.

Mebbe Dropbox is just being difficult, it might want everyone to load Drop Box then join in to a shared folder.

If so, then it is too too big of a pain in the ass --  experiment fails again

:D

Wooooo ....      Look it at all them arrows !!!

"Document opened in read-only mode."

I expected that when trying to do an edit, since I didn't supply any credentials and don't have a Dropbox account. I guess you have to be the owner of the file, or on a short list of trustees.

OK, Drop Box wants everybody to download their software and "join up" so they can "share" folders.   This is too too cumbersome.

Furthermore, it locks all files it does freely give to you through the internet download function unless you are signed up with them.

===================

If Drop Box is too cumbersome and Google Docs won't work with Linux, what other sorts of things can we do?   The goal is to put out a simple spreadsheet that folks can enter their own data into.

Can we get Mysterious to create a "common folder" that we can access through the list itself?

This is Filedropper, it appears to be very simple to use.

..... the bad news is they "own" your file from now on ....

Unless the file has some security, I'm not touching it.

dropbox would be acceptable to me.

but you need to manage it... send invites

otherwise it's open to spam, viruses and hackers... oh my!

File Dropper moves a file very easily through cyberspace, but it does not allow for collaborative entry.

File Dropper triggers your antivirus on the download, which stops and scans the transfer before you can open it.

File Dropper is a non-player for this particular need however, it just moves files and that's all.

Time for some creative thinkn' and drinkn' .....

We could have a generic Drop Box account called:

suzukisavage@mail.com

with password:       s40boulevard

Now you click on the Public Folder when Drop Box opens up.

Thar she blows !!!

Cap't .... it's the great white whale -- right in front of us !!!

This would allow a participant full easy access to a dedicated Drop Box account that would default to the right place every time you clicked on the Drop Box symbol on your machine.

(yeah, they are gonna get you to join up eventually -- one of them little clicks you do so freely will get you right in the crotch, jest like them nasty jaws of that great white whale)

Good news, it's free .....

Bad news is that anybody could mess the stuff up to whatever damage level their fat little fingers can do.

I'm talkin' a Hellishly Billish total level of destruction here.

Good news is no hassles and no "joining" folders or "inviting" people.

Fixing a nasty type screw up would be easy enough, scrape the folder and replace contents with a backup copy from your machine at home.

Let's try that for a while and see where it goes.
