Title: source of the knock
Post by simm22 on 07/28/12 at 08:42:47

So I am trying to narrow down the possible sources of my 1987 engine knock. So sounds loudest in the head mid to upper left side. The knock is constant and doesn't seem to get a whole lot louder than it is at idle, when the engine is rev'd. However it is pretty loud and noticeable as it is. Sounds to me like metal clanking together. I know about the tensioner and the valve clearence which will both be corrected soon,  but was just wondering if the more experienced guys could give me other possibilities.

How's it run?... sluggish?...

Since you mention the tensioner,..the chain could have slipped a cog, causing a spark knock...
... or,.. could be worse... rings or wrist pin or whatever... bad metal stuff...

Carbon build-up can cause a knock, too...

No way to know...

Since you say it sounds like metal to metal and somewhere upper I would check the top engine mount. I had an '02 that rattled something fierce. Took the tank off and voila, the bolt was loosened up enough to thump thump thump and vibrate the whole bike.

serowbot~ It isnt sluggish or anything like that. In fact the bike runs great, plenty of power. It just has a knock that kinda bugs me. It isnt there on start up but seems to get a bit louder as the engine gets warm. I know its hard to tell without hearing it. Just wondering if anyone had any insite. thanks

I wouldn't ride when you've got a metal on metal knocking. It can be very bad (look at my history to see how bad).
