Title: Got a muffler question
Post by Millerman on 07/21/12 at 04:38:57

I know i want a harley muffler to replace my stock one and also that i want one with a rail mount but i see their are many different harley part # for the rail mount muffs. So my question is will any rail mount muffler work?

Yes thanks Routy but I've read that but I'm wondering if every rail mount harley muffler will work or if some wont. Like i have seen many on ebay and the part#'s vary but they still have the rail mount on them. So i just want to know if someone can clarify that they all will mount up on the savage's muffler rail and also if one is shorter or longer.

Been looking at those myself these days.
YES, I'm fairly certain that all of them will work; as long as they have the rail mount; that's the part that bolts up to the stock muffler bracket.
Some of their mufflers are longer than others; mostly what I have seen are the shorty mufflers. I imagine a longer one would work, but I'm not sure. That Muffler post has exact part numbers listed if you need to be certain; or you could call your local Harley shop and ask them which ones are compatible with the numbers listed in that post.

I did discover that I will have to have an adapter made at a 10 degree or so angle to fit mine on. I'm going to try to get that done at the local muffler shop next week..

Harley... shorty... rail mount... no crossover tube... Baffle not drilled or knocked out...
Good to go.. ;)...

Screw part #'s... they've got a million of them... ;D...

Ok so I found a dyna muffler very nice shape right in the town I live in so I went and picked it up only thing is, is the person took the baffles out so essentially its just a straight pipe. So my question is should i mount her up or should i not even bother cause i wont have any back pressure. I only paid 5 bucks for it.

It will be loud and your performance may suffer. However my Dyna muffler (and I believe they all do) had what looks like an automotive freeze plug that directed the exhaust through the baffles. I believe any 1.5" freeze plug placed into the end that attaches to the header will put it back to normal. The inside necks down a little ways in and that is where it lodges. I used a piece of pipe to remove and install mine.

That's not a muffler... it's pipe...
Make a lamp out of it...  ;D...

Best to find one that isn't butchered... ;)...

darn  :-[ Think it'd be hard to make my own baffle?

The baffle is still in the back section. You need to somehow put a plug back into the center. That will direct the exhaust to the baffle. Seems like much trouble to me personally...

yeah it's probably not really worth it to try and put the plug back in, not to mention how would you get in there to secure it where it needs to be in the first place.

I guess if you're really intent on trying to use it you could try, not saying it would work, doing the washer mod baffle that some use on straight pipes towards the exit of the muffler.  What you do is take a large washer that fits in the opening and drill through the pipe.  then attach a bolt through the pipe to the washer so that you can secure it inside the pipe. with the bolt you will be able to turn the washer so that it allows more or less exhaust through to kinda tune it some.

It's easy! I've had mine out a few times to drill various holes in it. A piece of pipe keeps it straight. Tap it in until it's snug. Bolt it on.

These are photos of removing and installing the freeze plug. I drilled the hole in the freeze plug for a louder sound. The hole is optional. I hope this explains it.

Oh ok i got ya. Thats a good idea. Do u just push it down as far as it will go? What stops it? Do you have bolts to hold it in place?

I tap it down until it is tight. A couple inches or less after it catches. No bolts. Pressure fit. You could move it further in the pipe to tune it but I never did. I will go measure how far mine is.

My plug sits 6.5 inches from the edge of the inlet.

ok what did you make that plug out of?

It looks like an automotive freeze plug for an engine. Guessing from the looks it's maybe an inch and 1/2

It's the one that came with it. The HD forums say it is an automotive freeze plug/expansion plug. It should be 1.5"/38mm is 1.25".

They cost around $1. Buy one and try it.

HEY GREG,
Just curious, I'm sure the hole in the middle of the plug gave you a louder sound, but did you notice a serious change in the performance of the bike after you drilled it out?

Seems to me if that plug is so cheap and easy to re-install it would be easy to play around with a variety of holes and sizes etc. Might make the Harley pipes somewhat tune-able, which would be quite something!

If that's a 1.5" plug, I'm guessing it's a 1" pipe you're using? or 1.25"?

Also, If you haven't already, you should post those photos and info up in the tech section...

It was louder and deeper. If there was a performance gain or loss, I didn't notice. I just popped it out again to measure. The plug is 1.25" in diameter and my piece of pipe is 1" in diameter. They are tune-able for noise. Tune-able for performance? YMMV. I drilled different size holes, starting small, until I got a sound I liked. I would guess that the plugs aren't supposed to be removed/re-installed as many times as I have done it, but it hasn't shifted on me yet.

It is my understanding that is something belongs in tech, the mods will move it from rsd. I may be wrong though.

The location of the plug should be between the sets of holes in the tube - and I believe there is an equal number of holes in the front as in the back.  The purpose of the plug is to prevent the exhaust form flowing straight out the tube and to direct the exhaust out of the tube and through the front set of holes in the tube - then the exhaust enters the outer jacket of the muffler to resonate - then the exhaust flow through the back set of holes and into the tube so it can flow out the back.

From what I understand, the Tech Session is reserved for tried and proven repairs.....and not really for discussion threads.  At this point the repair is still in the discussion stage.  When you find the correct freeze plug and method for installation including depth....and then prove the freeze plug will stay in the pipe and not become a projectile out the back of the muffler......then you can write a Tech article on how to repair a Dyna muffler that is missing the plug.
