Title: Cant get these progressive 12.5s on?
Post by Josh C on 07/20/12 at 16:39:56

How do i cOmpress these shocks enough to slip them over the bolts?! Theyre the 12.5 and theyre about an inch too long to slip over the bolts withOut compression first. Both stock shocks have been pulled and the swingarms are hanging as far as they can before stopped by the passeger footrest on the muffler

Any advice?

Lower the rear tire   :-?

The bike is lfted. Both shocks off so the rear wheel is Hanging mid air. The passenger fOotrest is stopping the swingarm from going low enough as it stops on the muffler. It looks like even if i remove the footrest that the swingarm is going to strike the muffler before it hangs far enOugh for me to slide this on without compression

I have many times used a furniture clamp (sometimes called box clamp)
to compress gas shocks......... in the automotive/RV world.

I guess thebigger question is: if i have to compress this to get it to fit, is it gonna be too large to actually fit my bike? Sayi hit a bump, get a little air,  its gonna throw the swingarm into my muffler, right?

unless you put limiting straps or other method to limit the travel to just before the muffler hits,  yes if you go over a bump big enough to unload the rear suspension it's gonna hit.

Gonna' have to,.. remove the footpegs.. or move the muffler... or swap to a Harley take-off...
Even if you get them installed,.. you still have the problem...

PS.. also,.. watch for belt-guard rubbing the belt at the front pulley...
You'll need to mod the guard or ditch it...
;)...

PSS... 12" shocks are worth it... I love mine...;)...

Already had the guard removed. I did remove the footpeg and it still wont go. I had searched like all the posts about 12.5 and made my own about it. Everyone said they fit, guess everyone had swapped exhaust already. In answer to my last post, 12 or 12.5:
12.

Yeah,.. maybe so...
Sorry Josh...
I have the Harley muff... never occurred to me the shock might interfere with the stock muff...

... on the bright side... the Harley muffs,.. look and work great...
... and are pretty cheap and easy to install...

Best luck... ;)...

Just went out and measured... Mine are 12.25" center to center (Suzuki Intruder 800 shocks)...

Here's my bike early on in it's transformation...
Before and after... taller shocks...
It used to be red,... how 'bout dat?... ;D...

Is there a way to rotate the whole exhaust out a little? Loosen header bolts abd what else? Rotate the whole thing to give me an inch inside it?

Of course; loosen remove the bolt/s holding the muffler to the muffler mount bar; remove the nuts holding the heat shield next to the right side foot peg/controls and pull the heat shield off, and then loosen the header bolts; then the exhaust will rotate.

12.5" will go on without having to compress the shocks after the other stuff is out of the way and you lift the rear of the bike up.  A m/c jack is very helpful in doing this.

Hmmm, never thought about that.  Yes, I had already swapped out to a Mac muffler.
