Title: changing oil
Post by rl153 on 07/18/12 at 19:15:11

I only put about 800 to 1000 mi on my bike per season. Can I get away with  just draining  the oil or should or do I definately have to change the filter too?
(How many miles can you safely get out of 1 filter?) Thanks!

Funny thing that oil filter -- the oil filter mgf wants you to change it twice as often as the oil (that way he makes more money off of you).   Suzuki wants you do do it according to the oil change frequency in their owner's manual (which you need to do to keep your warranty up anyway).

Common knowledge is change the oil filter with each oil change, although many on here go two oil changes per filter because they are thrifty sorts of people.

Some have backflushed the filter with solvent after doing this 2x trick just to see what it picks up in the way of trash, not finding very much stuck in there to "clog it up" any after doing so they put the silly thing back in so it could pick up something useful during its service life.

You need to develop your own rules for this oil filter stuff, as the above spread of activities is a good bit wider than you might be able to tolerate right at first.

But you can get a lot of opinions on the topic -- hey, just ask about the best kind of oil to use when changing that oil filter ....

:D

...out of curiosity, what is the best kind of oil to use when changing that oil filter?  :D

(full disclosure, I've read through about a dozen of those threads already, I'm pretty sure that I'm going to try some Rotella T when I get my Verslavy)

Wet  .... definitely wet oil.    The dry lube stuff just blows away.

I see no harm in leaving the o9ld filter in there.

I used to have a 1964 Plymouth. The Owner's Manual suggested oil changes at 4000 miles, with filter changes every other oil change. Remember, this was with leaded gasoline, the lead from which contaminated the oil. Engines were not as well made, oil was nowhere near as good, gas contained lead, and the maker said the car could go 8000 miles on a filter.

I present this merely as information. You may draw your own conclusions.

I aways change the filter every time I change oil,It doesn't cost that much and your not running clean oil through the dirty filter.Thats like taking a bath in dirty water someone else just got out of.It could also lower the oil pressure some.

No it's like taking a bath in clean water but with a dirty tub :)

In the case of the Savage/S40, there actually is a little "bathtub" up in the head, which holds oil to lube the cam until the oil pump gets more going. This little bathtub probably holds more oil than the filter. Whether you change the filter or not, there is always some dirty oil to mix with the fresh stuff.

Yea, I always wonder how much of the dirty oil stays behind by just using the drain plug. Anyone ever power flushed their scoot?

Even if one managed to get every teensy drop of the old dirty oil out, and replaced it with clean oil, contamination begins with the first combustion cycle. The moment the engine is started the oil is no longer clean, even though the level of "dirt" is small at first.

I tip the bike way over side to side and you get about a cup of old oil from those bathtubs. But you will need more oil to fill up your bike so OF want do that oil cost money. ;D

Now, what would you do with a 73 year old man who talks about taking baths in dirty bath water, who talks about running his engine with no oil in it trying to pump out every drop of old dirty oil, but who also freely admits he's never had to change the oil in his Savage because his magical red oil never gets dirty (after 7 years no less).

Would you buy advice from this man?

;D   ;D   ;D

I'm not so sure about trying to drain the last drop out of the cam lobes tub. Next time you start the bike the lobes run totally dry until the oil pressure is up. I don't think this is such a good idea.

To spend less than $5 for a filter and add an additional 5 minutes to the job in order to change the filter along with the oil seems to me to be time and money well spent.

The filter swap is where the oil gets on things, its a few buck,, its more than 5 minutes counting cleanup & disposal, its not gonna hurt anything to run it again, its effectively NEW & holds nowhere near enough oil to negatively impact the quality of the new oil, save the $$, avoid the hassle, rerun it.,

Bill loves it or he wouldn't be doing it all the time.

If he didn't love it he would just let the oil stuff roll right on past rather than rising to the bait and hitting on it like a hungry large mouth bass slapping a surface bait each and every time it flutters on by him.

Motorcycle oil is made for motorcycles diesel not but it will work.Hammer made for driving nails crescent wrench not but it will work.

I used to be real anal about all this stuff,, its not that big of a deal. The Rule of 80/20 is everywhere,, well,, not in neurosurgery,, but in most things, & being "perfect" in getting every drop of old oil out to put new in,, How long is it all new? & what harm is there if theres 2 tablespoons of "Old" oil in with more than 2 quarts? Is there gonna be a place in the oil that eats the engines guts? Is it not gonna lubricate? Let logic guide you, not fear, not superstition & not tradition,, THINK about it,, Its really not that scary,,
