Title: This is how ya change your tires lol
Post by Millerman on 07/18/12 at 18:26:26

Just bought some new tires should be here tomorrow. Just thought Id get a head start. 99 savage with 6500 miles and original tires. They still had tread but were really dry rotted.

Looks a little naked... ;D...

PS... careful when you put the new ones on... First 25 to 50 miles will be slick from factory mold release...
I usually tie a piece of ribbon to my bars, to remind myself to be cool with the throttle for a while...
;)...

If you have time simple green and a green scotchbrite pad will take care of the mold release. My best friend bought a brand new Ducati and rode it a half mile and dumped it at an intersection, $2800 damage and out of work for a week.

Yeah, I learned that lesson from a friend who got new tires years ago and dumped his bike right in the shop parking lot!  :o

I just got new tires last week, scrubbed them nicely on a good 70-80 mile romp around some twisties in 90+ degree heat.  8-)

If you are mounting your tires yourself.....go to YouTube and check out the video on mounting a tire using a trash bag.  I have not yet tried it....but it looked pretty slick.  You place the new trash bag over the rim, and the slippery plastic makes it so you can basically push the tire on without tools.  The bag is not placed where the valve stem is located, and the tire is pushed over the rim beginning at that point.  Then you just pull out the trash bag.  Not sure how this works on stiff motorcycle tires.

Seems like he would have had an easier time pulling the bag out if he had let all the air out after mounting on the rim.

That video just blew my mind.  Wish I had seen that a few weeks ago when I had new tires mounted on my girlfriend's bike.  Could have saved us $60.

I'm sure it would, but then you would leave a coating of that behind in the bead seating area, which could cause some tire to rim slip issues.

Holy crap, he did both beads at once. Like a boss. Someone needs to get that man a beer.

And I have to agree with what rfw just said. You don't want any type of lubrication there, especially on a tube-style wheel. You'll rip your valve-stem clean off with the first hard launch/brake when your tire spins on the rim. Dry is the only way to go.

Well, lets wait until someone does it on a Zuk tire, then we can all celebrate.

Yep....he had a clincher rim.  On those the tire moves sideways and there is a notch in the rim and the tire bead that lock together when it is inflated.  There may be a bit more clearance, our tires have to move down into the recess over the spokes to get enough room for mounting.....and that may not be enough room for both sidewalls at once.

I am going to give this a try - but I will probably just do one sidewall, then put the tube in and try the second sidewall.  Even if you do have to get out a tire tool to help get it on.....the bag should provide assistance and help it to slide over the rim easier.

I found someone who claims to have pulled this off on his Ninja.  So that's promising.

The front is fairly easy as it is, so can believe this will work on the front.

The rear is tight.  If it works on the rear... holliluya!!!   [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]

It looked to me, like he had the bag too tight at the start...  Maybe, tenting it in the center, would allow for more slickyness in the process...

I've got to try this,.. but, I currently have two near new tires...

BTW, he pulled like heck to get the bag out, all you have to do is squeeze the beads together and there'll be no pressure on the bag so it'll slip right out.   :-?

I watched the trash bag video but just used my three tire spoons and some windex. Mounted the tires and tubes on the rim my self. Had help putting tires on bike but took only about hour n half.

I really like that method.  I will definitely give it a try.

I tried that trash bag trick mounting the tires for the two RYCA bikes.  It sure did look slick.  The video is a lot more entertaining than useful, however. After a half hour of trying to make it work, I got out the soap cup and the tire irons and mounted the tires the same way I've done it for the last half century.
