Title: Brake squeal
Post by Greg on 07/17/12 at 18:11:11

I need a break from my brake squeal. The rear brakes make noise every time I stop. They aren't worn much, at least according to the handy dandy wear indicator on the wheel. The front ones are new within the last 1000 miles. They only squeal occasionally.

Got rid of the stock fronts a long time ago and have never looked back.
Although, drilling the disc is supposed to fix that.  So now I got to find a set that I haven't worn down to glue and give it a try.

Kevlar pads if you can find them, or the generic name.
My favorite are "X" brand.

Also, my rears don't squeal, not a bit.  brake a few times, get them real hot.  and use them when ever you can.  keeps the moisture off I think.

Ive been known to hold light pressure on the rear brake just to get it hot..half a block or so & its pretty warmish Id say,

I don't ride my rear brakes but I use them as much or more than my fronts. From stop sign to stop sign on my town's block or just inching along in traffic jams and they always squeal. Maybe I should just replace them. I wonder if they're glazed?

I got rear squeal as well, and I use them more than the front. My front brakes are new in the last 500 miles, but are terrible to be honest.

My rear has been squealing like a stuck hog every time I touch it for the last 2or 3 weeks. Finally fed up with it, I took the hose to it at lunch today and lots of black brake dust was washed out of the hub. Didn't squeal at all on the way back to work either, must've just been real dirty in my case  8-)

Did you have to take anything apart when you hosed off the rear break ,Where abouts did you direct the water ? Mine squeels like heck too.

I've never had a rear drum brake squeal but if I did I would spray it with Sea Foam DEEP CREEP it should clean it up.

Ima gonna haf to show a mod ima ben testin for about a year now.
saw it on some dirt bike brakes and thought it could solve our problem.

the lead edge of the brake pad is sharp and angled so dust is moved to the open end rather than being scooped back into the pad.

I was just using a spray nozzle and hit the rear drum where it attaches to the hub, spraying from as far forward as possible...had the nozzle next to the motor and spraying almost parallel to the bike.

Helped with mine...  :-?

I'd like to try that ,but I'm thinking the brake dust will bind together in the drum if it doesn't wash out.IDK.

I've done this on ft pads on a few cars that were problematic with squeaking. But it won't help with rear shoe squeaks...
