Title: Front fender from Harley on a Savages rear?
Post by RobSchneider on 07/17/12 at 01:43:57

Hello there,

I want to have a short rearfender, that follows the tires rounding, and hangs like 1cm above the tire.
I can't seem to find a store where I can get a fender like that for the savage, but I was wondering if a Harley-frontfender would be suitable...

The sportster front fender had a nice round shape, so maybe that one? I can make a few holes at the swingarm side and mount it, but does the tire-size match?

Is there anyone who has done this before?

Somebody on here was using a Honda Goldwing front fender for the rear.  They were talking about it in my thread "Let's Talk About the Blue Collar Bobbers Fender."  8-)

Sportster front won't work.Way too narrow.A Fat Boy fender MIGHT.A sporty has a very narrow 100/90-19 usually the Fatty has a 130/80-16.Our bikes have a 140.Try Lowbrow Customs or BCB or one of those.I usually use trailer fenders. You're going to need more than 1 cm.from the tire. You need about 1/2" the tire grows at speed.

I've been looking around the 'net for a while and can't seem to find a list of bikes by tire size (it seems everyone does it the other way, finding tire size by bike).

The basic idea would be to find a bike with a front tire that is close to our rear tire in width, diameter, aspect ratio and then see if that front fender for the bike looks like something you might want. You'd have to rig up your own mounting solution though. the BCB fender uses struts that line up with the rear axle (and maybe another support farther up?). You could *probably* get a fender for a 130 tire or a 150 tire and bend it a little yourself to make it look better, but don't quote me on that.

I was shocked to start my search and find that fenders are being sold for $100-$300. Some as high as $500. for a fender! for a bent piece of metal! madness!

hi
i tried a harley rear fender cut it about and tried to make it fit and gave up in the end
so i ended up with a plastic motocross fender which looks good if you look on rubber side down on my big blue thumper i think there is picture of it if not there will be soon,i will try and add a photo of what i have done
the only thing with it being plastic is that it flexes around a lot so i had to strengthen it up on the inside by mounting a steel strip in the middle and fibreglassing it in then mounting a metal reinforcing strip on the outside and mounting it in the rear swing arm
Hope this may help but if not hope you find one that fits
cheers sparkie

WOW!
That is exactly what I meant!!
I'm certainly going to look for a cross fender right now! Which size did you take?

You might also look at these trailer fenders....they look really nice.  They will also be less flexible than a plastic fender.

That was me:

The front fender is from a '76-'79 Goldwing.
When I was looking into it, I looked at bikes that had front tires that matched the size of my rear tire, but keep in mind: I switched my rear to an 18" rim! If you're running a stock 15" rim, that's going to change things a lot!

Sparky: that rear fender looks GREAT on your bike; I never would have guessed that it came from a dirt bike.
I've definitely found that in searching for parts for my project, I have a lot of pieces that work that I would never have expected. Keep your search broad, and think outside the box!
