Title: 1999 suzuki ls650
Post by Millerman on 07/14/12 at 03:00:48

Hi everyone I'm new to the forum. Going to check out a 1999 for sale in a couple of hours and wanted to get some insight on what to look for. I'm know bikes (I've ridden dirtbikes since i was 9) as far as looking for wear and tear but just wanted some other info as to these thumpers. I'll add a link to the craigs ad so you can see the bike as well. I feel in love with these things when i started looking for another road bike as i owned a r6 in the past. Thanks for the help!

Its a 1999 original owner has 6587 miles and is bone stock. Im going to have her on the road tomorrow but before i take that first real ride I'm gonna change oil and filter. Ive always used yamalube performance 4stroke oil 10w-40 in my dirtbikes and I'm thinking of using it in the savage as well. Heres a pic.

Also I've been looking at oem parts through motosport and rockymountain and some parts including the oil filter they have 2 diffent models. Theirs MODEL T/V and then MODEL W/X/Y/K1/K2/K3/K4. I see on the oil filters the part # is the same but on other parts they are not so i was wondering what the difference is and how i can find out what model my bike is? Thanks

First thing I see is it's running lean (blued pipe and tiny bit on muffler).   Came from the factory super lean.  You may want to rejet.

Also,  since it sounds like you already know MC's....  you may want to loose that stock muffler.  Very restrictive.  Harley Dyna muffers fit near perfect.

At 6.5K miles,  you shouldn't have to do much to it other than the standard stuff.  Oil and tires.

Also,  models number letters changed year to year but the bike is almost unchanged since 1986.  Tranny was 4-spd in 86 & 87.   A lot of parts from '86 fit the 2012's.

Happy riding.  These are fun bikes.

EDIT:  here's how mine looked with a Dnya trun-out on it.
