Title: No spark, power to coil
Post by splash07 on 07/09/12 at 17:03:43

I am nearing the end of a prolonged build and today was the first time I tried to start the bike in over a year. I can smell gass when I crank it over but I am getting no spark. I pulled the plug and checked against the engine, no spark. NO spark = no vroomvroom. bad thing.  >:(

I recently had to put a new connector on my CDI box for reasons we wont go into here. I am fearful that I might have put the wires on the wrong pins in the connector. Does anyone have the wire placement for a 2000 savage CDI? much appreciated.

Checked the coil and it is getting power, it was getting spark fine when I tore it apart.

I don't know if this helps, but here is the service manual connection description...

1. Orange : to pick-up coil
2,3, 4 ......... . .. No connection
5. Black/ Yellow to ignition coil primary winding
7. Black to starter relay
8. Green to pick-up coil
9. Orange/White to ignition switch
10. Black/White Ground

you have 10 spaces but my CDI only has 8 pins.

yours should look like this...

If not you've put a pre 90 CDI on a 2001 and they have different timing.
you gotta swap the rotor to make it work.

Ok, so after switching the wire last night, i couldn't check the spark for fear of waking my roommate. I got up this morning and sure enough, there is a strong blue spark on start up. Now i just gotta wait til 5 to get off work and try and get her started!

No prob versy. I actually had to go look at my '86 to make sure the years were different.

Update: Bike runs like a scalded dog.

Splash,

Is that new connector OEM or aftermarket?

its aftermarket I guess, but it looks identical to the OEM one that I pulled off. Only difference is the color of the insulation seals

You have to spend at least 20 bucks since he ships form Japan.

Yep, that's who I figured.  Used him before.

This is about the only source available for some of our connectors, if you are anal about trying to keep high quality connectors in the bike.

Good stuff, for sure, but $$$!
