Anyone have any luck reducing the clutch slip on these bikes. It seems to be there on the 4 speed and the 5 speed.

I was considering adding a washer under the clutch springs to increase the spring tension, but other than that has anyone had any luck?

Ive also heard of others replacing the first oversize disk with regular disks and plate, but I have not heard feedback on that success.

I did find out through monkeying around that honda disks and some others fit in here opening up the option to drop a slipper clutch in there, such as the dyna ring.

I have put one in a dirt bike and it works like a charm.

I never knew it was a common problem w/ these bikes. And whenever it was, usually a proper freeplay adjustment fixed it.

I know that the 3 ls650's that I have ridden all had slip. One of them slipped upon shift till it was heated up then it didnt have a problem. The other slipped in a similar way but was always that way.

Mine slips when shifting into 4th and 5th. It would take like 5 or 6 seconds for the tranny to finally catch up with the engine speed.

Perhaps its just really coincidental that the ones I rode had the issues.

For sure the clutch cables werent tightened up, so freeplay wasnt the problem. I usually leave 1/4 inch of slop on my lever before it engages like all my other bikes ive had.

Don't do anything that increases the disengagement effort beyond stock, unless you somehow reinforce that clutch 'throwout paddle' which is a known weakness.

I'd just renew the plates, check that the spring lengths are within spec and make sure (duh) not to run the energy saving oil.

I also heard (but never verified) that it is good to soak the new plates in clean oil overnight before you install them, and that's supposed to prevent them from glazing? :-/ Can't hurt.

Mine does this, for a second or two, if I'm crankin' WFO (into 5th only)...

Are you using oil with friction reducers? That can cause slippage. Is slippage a word? :)

I shimmed my springs,, the clutch throw out broke about a year later.
May be completely unrelated, but I took the shims out.
