Title: Cylinder head gone
Post by Jimmer on 07/02/12 at 14:33:11

No sure what happened cam must  have seized up or oil pump has a problem. Pulled the top cylinder head off and the bearing journals, on the oil pump side, look like the melted. Has anyone ever had the cam journals rebuilt or over sized and brass bearings/ bushing installed to compensate for the over sizing. The price for a new cylinder head is around 700.00 to 900.00, plus the cam for about 150.00. Does the idea of having the cylinder head re sized sound  practical or what, would you do. Any other suggestion, to repair the bike would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Rotella T6 5w40.I've been using that oil for about 4 years never had a problem. I ride between 6000 to 8000 miles a year. Could a been the oil ,but highly unlikely, I change it about every 3000 miles and each spring before I start to ride. It was running good, then the rattle started at about 1000 mile into the season.

Theres been no wrenching done lately? Just riding? OIl level up?
If so, Id have to have a look at pump drive, if its okay Id have to pull the gear & spin that pump. Mite need to build a dam & put enough oil in to let it pump.

T6 is the full syn version of Rotella T. Yes it's marketed mainly for diesel engines but it's also JASO approved for use in motorcycles, and used by millions of riders and racers the world over.

Cars have cataclysmic perverters, so, certain things arent in their oil..
18 wheelers dont have them perverters,, & their oil is meant to handle the pressures at the bearings that a diesel; generates, which is more than a gas engine, but I suspct their bearing surfaces are considerable larger,.seeing as how they tend to last in excess of a MILLION Miles.

So, if an oil is good enough to keep a Big Rig on the road that long, I think itll be okay for my thumper,.

Not carrying doesnt mean you arent an idiot.,

Did I understand you correctly? A new head costs $700-$900? At that rate, put a new engine into it.

Lot of people on here use cheap oil,Its not cheap in the long run.Its called penny wise and dollar foolish.

He needs to be a little more specific in his insults, he's just fishing for minnows right now with a small totally bare hook.

nahhh, we all know your oil stance, and it will never change.  It's just not worth it to do an oil battle, that's been done time and time again. It's really sad that you have really dropped down to the point of taking any thread now that even hints at an oil to try and start an oil war.
