Title: Smoke after I ride
Post by Cory1116 on 07/02/12 at 11:40:11

So I was hoping somebody might have some answers for me here. I just took my bike in for a tune up, new plugs, oil, filter etc. and when I got it back the engine smokes a little between the crankcase and the exhaust for a few minutes. The weird thing is it doesn't start smoking until about 30 seconds after I turn the bike off. It's like the oil has to drain out of the head to get to where its smoking. I took it back to the shop to have them fix it 3 times now thinking it was the gasket for the oil filter plate. That's replaced but still having the issue. I don't want to take it back to the shop as they have been bested by this gasket, if that's the problem, three times. Has anyone dealt with this before, maybe I have a larger unrelated issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Only going to smoke off the header.
You have a small leak somewhere and untill you stop, won't jump on the header.
The leak should be obvious as it will collect dirt.

Places it could be... clutch cover, oil filter cover, oil filler cap, Head gasket, Head plug.

Head plug is behind the header in the hole to the left on the head.

Used to happen to me. Ended up being the notorious head plug leak.
I used to have smoke all round the exhaust, then it started getting worse.
Try to plug the cap in the head gasket. Theres some very good tutorials on this site on how to do it. Takes about 2 hours labor, not to hard to do.

Did you have them torque the head?

No, I didn't have them torque the head, I'm thinking they weren"t a suzuki dealership and they only replaced the larger o-ring with the oil filter. I know there is a smaller one too that goes on the outside of the filter, maybe that's my issue

Haha, this title reminds me of the old joke "Do you smoke after sex?"

If it were me, I'd quit taking it back to the shop and just fix it myself.   The more desperate they become to fix the problem, the more they will start tweaking things that maybe shouldn't be tweaked on too much.   There are a bunch of stories in here where shops have broken stuff due to incompetence or lack of experience.   This especially true if they aren't familiar with the Savage and it's nuances. (IMO, of course, but based on past experience).

Naaah, that one is inside & affects oil pressure, You mite wanna pop the filter cover & have a look at the O ring. Or, take it to the car wash & give it a good hosing, but dont go pointin the wand right in the crack where the oil filter cap is,just get all the oil off, dry it off, ride it a few minutes & pull over & see if you can find a leak,

Sure enough they didn't tighten down the oil filler cap enough. Did as you said and took it to the carwash, cleaned it up and went on a long ride to burn any extra off and it worked. Thanks for your comments guys. I look forward to many more questions as this is my first savage and I plan on using her to learn to work on bikes. Seems like a pretty straight forward motor to work on.

Wouldn't it just boil off any way?

Ive never seen oil & water mixed that cleared up. May do it, Ive just never seen it, I wouldnt want the water in my oil even if I knew it would go away later,

A coupla drops, ehh,, no biggee, but enough to make it all milky?

YOure probably correct in doubting that enough would get thru to be a problem,

W/ a car wash nozzle ??

Maybe w/ that 5,000 lb pressure washer I rented one time that would dig ditches in cast iron :o ;D
