Title: New guy, with some Q's
Post by Bosgarage57 on 07/02/12 at 10:50:28

Hey guys, my girl just got an 01 Savage 650, she traded her ninja 250 for it.  So far it is a great bike, but we have a few questions.

Tires - Tires are completely bald, any recommended suggestions?
Oil, Oil filter - We usually run Rotella Full syn in all our  bikes, I suppose this is jsut as good as any for the thumper right?  Where does everyone buy their oil filters at?
Air Filter - THought about putting a K&N in it, but seen the DIY to amke your own. How is everyones holding up?
Exhaust - the stock exhaust is all blued, ugly and sounds like poo.  Looking at a dyna exhaust, is there any particular year I need to look for, or just make sure it has the slide on it?

Any other suggestions we need to fix, check before I unleash her out on the road?  Brakes and other fluids look good.

How many miles? They have to have an eye kept on the cam chain,,
Listen to the valves, mite be a good diea to adjust.
If its all blued up on the header, either someone ran it sittin still or its lean,
The dyna will flow better,
Mite have to rejet, tune the carb,,

Yea I am suspecting it is lean, and when we  get the new exhaust we will put new jets in it and tune.

It has 15K on it.  Guy said last year the motor had a seal that leaked, so they took it to a local shop and had the whole motor rebuilt.  Im not really buying it, just watching and listening for anything that doesnt sound right.

Never had a thumper before, had concours's and sportbikes, I currently have a vulcan 1500 I ride.

15,000 is right in the cam chain Service area,, You seem to be experienced, so, listen to it on the right side, or, drop the header & pull the side cover & measure it,
I wouldnt be shy to ask the PO which shop & go visit to see what all they did,. You may have all new guts in that thing,, IDK,,

Because on here the S40 has so many problems I Would use a high quality Racing synthetic motorcycle oil.I use Klotz. For tires I like Pirelli 66 Route they handle very good and improve the ride a lot,Which the S40 is a rough rider.
