Title: Millions Without Power - Grid Kaputt? - RU ok?
Post by Stimpy - FSO on 07/02/12 at 07:04:16

Beginning of July 2012
East Coast, US, Day 3.

Heatwave and and still no power.

Yahoo News reporting 15 casualties and
"catastrophic" damage to power grids
with no set date for restoring cell, water
or power services in some areas. Citizens
and voluntary private companies doing most
of the clean-up and tree/post/power lines
removal from roads. FEMA nowhere in sight, again.

Is all this true?
Main stream news reports are few and contradictory.

10 states set all-time record high-temps?

Large parts of D.C. w/o power   ...really?

Live Heat Map here:

Care to report on YOUR AREA?

Aprox.Location/conditions/what have you seen/heard?

Good luck too all
and start prepping for winter, trust me.

:)

I guess I better get the carb mod done on my generator so it'll run on propane.,

Eastern North Carolina

I am fine, we lost power for a couple of hours, wind, rain, thunder and lightning.  Evidently, there were a couple of tornados in the area, nothing confirmed by the weather service.  A few local areas with much damage, roofs off, trees down and on house, cars, etc. sheds and barns destroyed.  Two people in Beaufort County were killed and 40 taken to the hospital with storm related injuries, according to the local TV.  Another death in a neighboring county.  Still alot without power.

It is amazing that one side of the road can have nothing and the other side is devestated.  I guess that is the nature of tornados.

Wife was in the Richmond VA area over the weekend, several confirmed tornados up there.  A tree fell on her cousin's truck, big mess in their yard.  Much the same story there, one area nothing, the other massive destruction.  Many there without power from a storm last week, still didn't have power, so they couldn't loose it.

Thankful me and mine are OK, but hurting for those who aren't.

Thanks for asking.

I travelled up route 81 on saturday and there were tree down all the way up through virginia. Stopped for gas a few times but the gas stations had no power. Thought I was gonna run out of gas but found one with power just in time. Luckily I had a couple gallons in the bike on the back of the truck in case I needed it.

I'm in CT. I had no idea this was going on but I've been in the garage rebuilding the engine for my car since the weekend. My power never skipped a beat. I had a sprinkle of rain but near the coast we had quarter to golf ball sized hail.

Been nice and cool out in central Calif for 2 weeks or so, but I'm waiting for the shoe to drop, so to speak.

hasn't rained here in Jackson MS in weeks ... Temps are not horrible, but its not fun ridin' weather either.
Low today 86 high 98 sunny, 0% chance of rain, 99% humidity

We should start hitting the (afternoon thunderclapper) cycle pretty soon. Maybe today even.

Sensationalist thread title. I was expecting to hear about some huge malfunction like the blackout of 2003, not some thunderstorms. The grid isn't "kaputt" it's just damaged.

Here in Mooresville S-West N.C.  all's well, been hot  and my lawn is unhappy but that's about it.  I heard that Washingtom DC and that greater area has been hit bad the past few days with the power down, but I  can't confim  :o

We had one helluva storm Friday evening around 7 pm.  Power flashed off a couple of times, but came back on, and stayed.  But I lost cable, internet, and cell phone service.  Lots of tree branches down, but no full trees.  Saw several up-rooted trees down the street from me though.  It blew so hard, I've never seen it like that before.

Went out Saturday to check on all my husband's buildings (that he takes care of for work), found a few broken lights, signs, roof hatch blown open on one building, but nothing major.  All the gas stations that were open had lines for gas that were several blocks long, radio said the average wait was 45 minutes to get gas.  We drove about 50 miles before finding an out of the way 7-11 where we got gas in about 15 minutes.  Drove to our camp to check it out, and surprisingly only had one tree down in the front yard, not even close to the house.  And the power was still on.  Lots of areas in between with no power.

Got to work this morning and we have power, internet, but no cell service.  Guy I work with, his whole county shut down the water supply because a power line fell into the lake/dam.  So there are alot of terrible stories within a few miles of me, but I'm thankful to have been lucky.  All my in-laws are without power, and expecting several days before its restored.

Sucks with no cable or internet, but I'm happy to have power (i.e. Air conditioning!) because the temps have been 95-100°.  And humid!

We have had, and will continue to have, some very powerful solar storms this year. These storms dump many gigawatts of power into the upper atmosphere. This is possibly the cause of our weird weather.

Glad to hear all of you are ok minus the couple of
shingles missing on your roof, the thing is that many
lost power and ability to communicate so just wanted to
start a thread to paint a more useful, fuller picture of the
situation based on real info given by REAL people we all know
and not  just what tv's talking heads are parroting around as always.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry NY mike if things are not doomy enough for you and
if I mislead you with my alarmist title, the thing is that for
a lot of folks this was/is a big deal and also I just had 45
characters for the title so it needed to be short and to the point,
the kaputt part is cause I was thinking in German, I should have
used the word "down" instead, sorry won't happen again mikey.
;)

arteacher.-

yes, that is very valid theory, old farmer almanacs from the
1800's based their yearly predictions souley on observed
solar activity and cycles, they were amazingly precise without
the aid of satellites and such; flares, the magnetosphere, general
electromagnetism and geomagnetic solar storms are still widely
misunderstood/ignored by many who instead look for answers in
more popular, and profitable, "junk science", mad world I tell you.

You all be safe now.

A-ha! so that's why you want to convert your carburetor
to run on propane!  ...will methane work too?   :-?

We're under severe drought conditions by west TN standards. Region wide burn ban, region wide fireworks bans, some of the municipal fireworks displays look to be cancelled. Fire danger is just too high.

Have had a few small power outages, 10 minutes to a couple hours long. Heat for the last week has been topping 100-105F actual at the farm. Humidity has been rather low, so not much heat index.

It needs to cool off and/or rain. Soon.

Thought about/realized this later.  Wife was in the Richmond VA area, cell phones quit working there for a while.  Hers was roaming, since we have NC based phones, though with nationwide coverage.  Others up there complained about their phones, VA based, not working as well.  People go into major panic when their cell phones do not work.  Makes me wonder how we made it without them.

Just a reminder, with the cordless landline phones, they usually will not work without electricity.  You need one of the old corded phones, with no electric connection, to keep working when the power is out.  Sometimes even smart people forget that.

I have a Lineman's handset just for those times when power is out and I need to use the phone. It's left over from my days as a telco installer.

I keep an old phone around so if theres a problem I can use it for troubleshooting, If the portables quit, I need to know if its them or the phone system,.
