Good dad, lucky kid.
YOu sure started with a good looking bike. I sure like that paint.
Looks like youre well on your way with lacing that wheel. & Yea, get it running in a circle , then get it centered up.
Ya gotta know its been done successfully by tons of guys who just had to do it cuz they messed one up & couldnt pay someone to fix it,
I used to mess wheels up on my 10 speed all the time. I carried spoke wrenches with me. I had the rear fold up in a corner one day & just slid to a halt, took better than an hour to fix that mess,,folded to 4 points, had to loosen everything, put feet on 2 of them, grab to other 2 & pull with the hands & push with the feet, then tighten everything back up.,.
I was using the rolled edge of the asphalt where it met the cement to make the gutter like a berm,, & I was goin pretty good,, didnt ever try that again,,

Excited about the build - looks fun so far.

Looks like your beard is going as fast, maybe faster than your bike!  :D

A lot of work, but so much pleasure and accomplishment in "doing it yourself".  I can't wait to see the results!   Great job on the website too, BT.

You're such an inspiration that I put in a dishwasher today! Took me all day, ran into some leak issues that took some time to sort out, mostly because there wasn't a lot room for wrenching. At least I didn't flood the house or electrocute myself, so the wife says I'm getting better.   :D

Hey, Teach,, you do know theres a dot on the tire thats sposed to line up with the valvestem, right? They check tire balance & mark the lite spot & by putting it with the stem its on its way to balanced, .. or so I hear,, maybe someone else will chime in?>

Post by braveteacher on 07/05/12 at 20:24:30

Justin...yes my father in law told me to line the mark up with the valve...but apparently with a Kenya tire you are supposed to put that mark on the other side...he made fun of me for using 3 oz of weights...says I have to break the tire down again and slide it around on the rim...live and learn....

Title: Re: 2011 S40

Yea, so they say,, I gotta tell ya tho,, I was really hopin by this point in life I would stop with the painful/expensive lessons..

Awesome!! Can't wait to see how this turns out! Though, have to say in stock trim the orange/black tu-tone LS650 is certainly one of the nicest looking Suzuki has ever put out! 8-)

I noticed you put different oils in each shock. I'm not sure why you'd do that. Just because you can use ATF doesn't mean it's the same viscosity as the factory oil. You should use the same in both.

+1
yep, going to have different dampning, gonna cause problems.

Title: Re: 2011 S40
Post by braveteacher on 07/07/12 at 07:01:37

I don't think the oil will cause a problem...I think jamming the springs down in the forks will cause more of  a problem with a rough ride...if there is a problem...I know how to fix it...

Title: Re: 2011 S40
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 07/07/12 at 11:53:18

You mite not be able to feel it, but if the viscosity is different in the tubes, one side will come up easier than the other, & that will tend to thingy the sliders in the top tube a little, I would expect a short service life from the seals,
But,, I really dont have much experience in such matters,, thats just my imagination working on a mechanical ( potential) problem,

Title: Re: 2011 S40
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 07/07/12 at 20:53:30

So, I went & asked some guys who have Mucho Experience,,& heres what one of them had to say,.,

Modern forks use one side for compression damping, and the other for rebound.
Since things are not equal to begin with, I see no ill effects from a different lubricant in each leg.
Presumably his aim was a performance improvement, and perhaps he achieved one.

So,, Ride on Brother,, Ya done allrite there,

Same thing my father in law said...We will see...I might have to pull it off again anyways because I don't think I like the placement of the clip on's...if I do I might just go ATF in both...

So, I guess if a guy had 2 sets of forks , & both of them had the left tube bent & you built up a pair out of just the right side, you would either have rebound or compression damping & be scratchin yer head wonderin What the Hekk???
I had no idea one side handled one job,,

How much would you want for the gas tank? And front/rear orange fenders and orange side covers?

I like the look of the orange and black...was maybe thinking of converting mine to that cover.

I agree,, thats a real pretty color scheme you found. If youre gonna change colors, someone may want to swap their metal bits for yours & let them get modified & painted,

Not sure if this means anything......but on my Trials Motorcycle they do everything they can to save weight.  One side of the forks has the spring in it......the other side has the dampening rod in it.  Seems to work just fine.

Looks good. Nice pics.

Isnt the rear brake system supposed to pull instead of push?  Maybe it will still work, just not what the kit is supposed to do.

Post by braveteacher on 07/16/12 at 13:13:56

I totally screwed that one up...No wonder I about killed myself trying to get it to work...back to the drawing board on that one...even though I got it to work...might be better on the up side pulling instead of the down side pushing...My first bike build...still learning.

Looks good. Its going to be real cool looking.

I think the Ryca bike would be incredible if they offered that tank with an installation kit instead of the cut up stock one. I know they sell fiberglass versions of that Benelli for $300 to $400 or so. You would still save money over the $700 stock tank mod.

Your bike is going to look awesome.
